Though tamils and sinhalas are very much similar, the caste issue is not strong among sinhalas for the past century or more.
Even the Karawe's came forward and fought to be equal with govigama's , I think, during the last century. Ssri Lanka had prime ministers and Presidents from low castes.
In brief, the caste issue is not as strong an issue as among tamils.

Dont talk about strong or weak, I know sinhala people who suffered due to caste systems, I know people with Fernando names despearate to change to Peraras or Nayakes etc!!
Its slowly going, for both Sinhalese and Tamils!!
Even today Sinhala matrimonial ads go with caste and religion reffered to it, why is that for fun?
