COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lankan warplanes bombed Tamil Tiger targets in the island`s north and east on Tuesday but there were no immediate reports of any casualties.
In Oslo, Sri Lanka`s main foreign donors -- the United States, the European Union, Japan and Norway -- said they were deeply concerned about the conflict.
`(We) will keep pushing forward towards a resumption of the peace process,` Tomas Stangeland, a spokesman for Norway`s Foreign Ministry, said after a meeting between the donors.
The warplanes bombed a suspected rebel sea base in the northwestern Mannar district and also targeted jungle mortar positions in the eastern Batticaloa district, the military said.
The government and rebels are locked in almost daily land and sea battles in a civil war that has killed nearly 70,000 people since 1983. The two sides signed a ceasefire deal in 2002 after Norwegian mediation but fighting resumed in 2004.
The military captured the Tigers` eastern stronghold earlier this year and says it has nearly driven the rebels from the east altogether, which would leave the rebels confined to the island`s far north where they run a de facto state.
The Tigers called on the international community to force the government to stick to the terms of the 2002 ceasefire pact. Government officials say the accord was too soft on the rebels.
`I believe the constructive step ... (is to) force the Sri Lankan government to implement the ceasefire agreement 100 percent to pave the way for peace talks,` the Tigers` political wing leader S.P. Thamilselvan told a pro-rebel Web site.
The government has vowed to destroy the Tigers militarily, while the rebels have threatened to use all means at their disposal, including suicide bombers and light aircraft smuggled into the country in pieces.
Analysts say no clear victory is on the horizon and fear the conflict could rumble on for years.

GoSL the failed state should leave tamils live free from its state terrorism !
The reality today is that anyone who harbours a wish to see a united and prosperous Island of Sri Lanka has to first concede Thamizh Eezham and allow Tamils to build the state peacefully. It is possible that in a matter of a few years, the Tamils and Sinhalese may forge unity once again, but this time a strong bondage, reinforced with self respect. |

'Prabakaran should be held responsible for the deaths of over 70,000 people in Sri Lanka - V.Anandasangaree '
V.Anandasangaree : 'I wonder whether even you knew as to why you gunned down Mr. Alfred Duraiappah, a popular political figure, while he was praying before Lord Vishnu at the Ponnalai Varadarajah Perumal Temple'
Not only him, Dr.Neelan Theruchelvam (I apologize from you Dr. if I made mistake when writing your name), Hon. Lakshman Kadirgamar like well educated Tamil leaders......
Who killed all... Uneducated VP.
This is the way LTTE liberate Tamil people. Please think my dear Tamil friends.
Help to Great V.Anandasangaree to protect and uplift the status of Tamil people

The word peace is not on VP's dictonary !
Quote by-Peter Voke- defence analyst- Times magazine
PRABAKARAN IS THE MAIN OBSTACLE FOR PEACE. IF HE DIES SRI LANKA WILL ACHIEVE PEACE.
As it is- Who wants war ? No one except Prabakaran
-Every one is sick of war. 70000 deaths so far and tamils are worse off.
-Further war is not likely to solve anything but will create carnage mainly to hapless tamils
-90% tamil civilians in Batti voted for peace at last election ( ? the reason for killing Pararajasingham for allowing voting ). Others too would have given the same verdict if VP did not stop them.
-GOSL does not want war.
Why is VP scared of peace??????
Peace means elections/democracy/prosperity/ jobs/better living standards/investment/business
All these mean erosion of LTTE authority and his power. Cadres deserting. No grounds for war.
Also he will never ever share power with any one whom he tried to destroy ?particularly the other tamil parties !!!!!!
Peace also means that Indian RAW could catch him for Gandhi killing !
Peace further means no grounds for his security, hence revenge attacks.
Recent article- Prabakaran lives to kill and kills to live !
Proffesor James Jupp ? Australia ? VP is a pathological killer?
Karuna?s article ?he gets sadistic satisfaction in killing people?
In year 2000 in LTTE passing out parade he said ?TAMILS SHOULD SUFFER. THEN THEY WILL SUPPORT US?
Normally all world leaders uplift the living standard of people and try to serve them as much as possible to win their support. No wonder the LTTE leader is a psychiatric patient with manic depression !!
SO WAR IS THE ONLY OPTION FOR THIS MOST SELFISH LEADER ON EARTH!
THAT IS WHY HE DID NOT GRASP PEACE WHICH WAS AT HIS FINGER TIPS WITH FEDERAL SOLUTION OFFERED BY UNP.
So just because he can?t face peace, he will create war just for his own gain He is the curse of Tamils and all Sri Lankans !
He certainly is not fighting for tamil liberation but for his own survival !!

ONLY CFA can save VP and THAMILCHELVan from certain death.
On June 2, the 56 Division (four battalions) and 57 Division (seven battalions) launched a limited pre-dawn operation to seize more terrain. The general areas of Villatikulam, North and North West of the village of Kalmadu (already under Security Forces control) were the scenes of fierce battles.
By 8 a.m. that day, Tiger guerrillas launched a counter attack. Groups of guerrillas confronted the troops almost head on. Heavy fighting continued for over seven hours.
Troops were forced to make a tactical withdrawal. Later that evening, the guerrillas fired 130 mm artillery. More than 800 of the Army's own 130 mm artillery shells were destroyed after one of them fell at a storage area south east of Pompeimadu. It led to deafening explosions and a massive bonfire.
Security Forces were tight lipped about their own casualties. The Sunday Times has learnt from highly placed Army sources that five officers and 67 soldiers were killed. A further two officers and 24 soldiers are declared missing in action. Twenty officers and 298 soldiers were wounded in action.
Adding statistics of claimed guerrilla deaths as well as injuries in the recent months would have surpassed the numbers military top brass give as the total strength of the LTTE. Independent verification of guerrilla casualty figures is not possible. Among the items the Army lost was an armoured Buffel troop carrier that had moved to evacuate casualties, a Jeep, arms and ammunition. A 152 mm heavy artillery gun was damaged.
YET, THE DISPARITY IN THE RATIO HAS CONTINUED THROUGHOUT THE DIFFERENT PHASES OF THE SEPARATIST WAR. AGAINST THIS BACKDROP, THE BIGGEST QUESTION THAT LOOMS LARGE IS THE MONEY TO FIGHT THE STEPPED-UP WAR.
