Thursday, 14 June 2007 - 4:48 AM SL Time

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has launched a series awareness programmes for Police officers. About 40 officers from stations in the North Central Province participated in the first programme held in Anuradhapura last week. Officers of the Women and Children`s Desks of the Police stations were given special attention in selecting the participants, a HRCSL spokesman said.

Providing awareness on international standards and local laws relating to child rights, updating knowledge on new laws and recent amendments to the law on child rights, developing skills of the participants and changing their attitudes, minimizing human/child rights violations, identifying child rights violations in the respective areas and developing collaboration among the institutions dealing with child rights are the objectives of the series of programmes.

The programme consisted of several lectures and a round of discussions in which each participant could come up with the practical problems. Nimal Punchihewa, Additional Secretary of the HRCSL, Mrs. Thilani Rajapakse, Director, Monitoring and Review, W. J. N. Senaratne, OIC Police, Service Training- North Central Province and Dr. Ajith Jayasena, JMO, Anuradhapura General Hospital conducted lectures at the programme.

Even if you hire and properly train Police men it will not make a difference until politicians stop interfering with their work and a police men's promotion is not based on how many times he kisses the politician's A--.

Is this a joke?

Weren't they taught about human rights during their training?

The vast majority of SL cops are thiefs, pimps, torturers and murderers.

How can you teach human rights to these criminals? LOL

I knew they were thieves, tortures, and murders but I did not know they were pimps too. So when your on vacation and you need a chick just see the closest police man.

Was this the reason tourist police was created?

Human Rights Violations by SL police officers will stop tomorrow following the programmes. All the wolves will turn into lambs and we can live happily ever after.

Sinhalamised Institutions and Institutionalised racism in Sri Lanka.

During the troubles in Northeren Ireland the police was comprised of 85% protestants and ill treated the Catholics. That was the reason why IRA bombed the police, army and British politicians including the Brighton Hotel where then PM M Thatched stayed.

In Sri Lanka the police is 99% Sinhalese and the army 99.9%, how can you expect such Security Forces be neutral? The West must be explained the ground political reality and the injustices. There is not a single Tamil among the 11 Supreme Court judges.
