State funeral for Prof. Samaranayake

The Government has decided to accord a funeral for late Vidya Jyothi Professor V.K. Samaranayake with full state patronage. The funeral will take place at 4.00 p.m today, June 13, at the Independence Square, Colombo. According to Professor P. W. Epasinghe, Presidential Advisor and the acting chairman of Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA), President Mahinda Rajapakse has advised the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs to accord a funeral with state patronage for the late Professor.
According to the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs, the government has taken this decision in appreciation of the services rendered by the late Professor Samaranayake for the ICT Industry in Sri Lanka. According to Chairman of the Funeral Committee, Dr. Ruwan Weerasingha, Minister of Public Administration and Home Affaires, Honorable Karu Jayasuriya chaired a meeting this morning with the members of the funeral committee to discuss the funeral arrangements of the late Professor.
The remains of late Professor V. K. Samaranayake are currently lying at his residence in Jayanthi Mawatha, Ethul Kotte. Tomorrow at 9.00 am, after the religious observances, his remains will be taken to Professor V. K. Samaranayake Auditorium at the University of
State funeral...
Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) for the public to pay their last respects. Late Professor`s remains will be then taken to Independence Square at 4.00 pm.
A number of local and foreign intellectuals have already issued condolences on the demise of Professor V.K. Samaranayake.
Professor V.K. Samaranayake, who was the late Chairman of Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka passed away last Wednesday while on an official visit to Sweden.

Dear friends, please do not take the death of the professor for your 'MUD BATTLE'.
He should be honoured for ever. I express my heart felt condolence over the loss of Vidya Jyothi Professor V.K.Samaranayake.

Not sure why he is getting a state funeral. What has he done to the Lankan IT Industry. Pl educate me If I am missing something here.
Look at India, Vietnam and Philippines. These three countries are milking the new wave of IT Outsourcing. UK, USA are moving IT/Business Processing work to India, China, Vietnam and Philippines. Zero for Lanka.
Why couldn't he use his power, knowledge influence the GOVT to promote IT. What a shame.
