Expatriates in the United Kingdom have organized a protest against the sale of Buddha Head candles and request their countrymen to join hands in their protest.
Last year, Homebase Company in the UK had started selling Buddha Head candles and later withdrew the product from their shelves after protests by the Sri Lankan High Commission and Sinhala expatriates in the UK, organizers of the protest said.
`Now again, TESCO super markets in the UK are selling bigger Buddha Head candles at £5.97 each all over Britain.
We informed the matter to London`s Sri Lanka High Commission. The High Commission has spoken to TESCO authorities and is waiting for a reply, we are told,` Niroshan Mohotty, a member of the organizing committee of the protest campaign told The Island.
He said that a group of Lankans living in East London had complained to TESCO Supermarket in Goodmayes, East London, where the Buddha Head candles were being sold, that selling such item was desecration of Buddist religion.
The TESCO manager promised he would have a word with head office. Two days later, the TESCO Head Office informed Sri Lankans that they were not going to withdraw said candles, but would continue selling them, Mohotty said.
`This is sheer obstinacy on part of TESCO directors who are just interested only in profit making. Almost all in the Board of Directors are Jewish and disregard sentiments of minorities following other faiths,` Indika Wijeratna, another member of the campaign`s organizing committee said.
`This way, TESCO would soon start selling bread and cake in the shape of Buddha in their selling outlets, so that non-Buddhists can slice them and eat. They know that Buddhists are a mild and meek minded creatures who would not raise voice or a finger no matter up what happened to their idol of worship,` he said.
He urged Sri Lankans, irrespective of their faith, to get together and protest to Tesco and if possible to take the matter with their local MPs asking them to talk to Tesco authorities about this disgraceful trade ploy.

These idiotic protestors shun the fact that CREMATION is the last Buddhist rite.
Living in the UK, they think that if Bread is made in the shape of Buddha it amounts to slicing him and be eaten by non Buddhists. I am amazed that these creatures are still living in a developed world.
These idiots still have to learn the realities in a captalist economy that means trade liberalization where they will even sell their mothers in nudity.
Idiots just shut up and put up with the new world culture.Don't tell me that you'll have not visited strip bars.

To be fare, I doubt if the people behind this had any specific intention to discredit Buddhism or Lord Buddha when they manufactured these candles. They are just after money. I am not trying to justify what they did by analyzing this using a demand-supply model. But the fact is these people are just catering a particular market in most western countries. Statues of Lord Buddha have become a household item to most westerners. Anyone who wants to show off bit of spirituality will first buy a Buddha statue before anything else. This has become a style to most westerners. I have spoken to many women who usually works in those psychic shops wearing Indian Shalvars and Necklaces made out from beads. They know nothing about Buddhism or Hinduism. They are just attention seekers who wants to stand out from the rest. All they do is uttering something they think is Buddhism, using a set of word that sounds very spiritual.
On the other hand, this shows the true face of Christian Modernity and the concepts originated from that, like secularism, multi-culturalism etc. This is a trend that is not spared even people like Jesus Christ. They sell from anything to everything from Che Guevara to John Paul the Second. When the Sinhala Throne at Polonnaruwa came under the influence of South Indian Saivism, we had the decency exclude carvings of cows from moonlight stones (Sandakadapahanas). That is the multi-culturalism that prevailed in this island during the times of so called feudal kings.
