COLOMBO (AFP) - Artillery and mortar battles between government troops and Tamil rebels raged in northern Sri Lanka, the day before an attempt by top donor Japan to revive the tattered peace process.

The clashes followed on from fierce hand-to-hand battles over the weekend that left scores of combatants dead along the front lines that separate government areas from the mini-state run by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
'The army conceded the territory they had recently captured along the Mannar and Vavuniya defence lines,' a top military officer who declined to be named said of Sunday's fighting.
'Security forces were too thinly spread when the Tigers attacked,' he said. |

President Mahinda Rajapaksa said most complaints about abductions -- many of which are levelled at state security forces -- were false.
Nordic truce monitors suspect military elements were behind the execution-style murder of 17 local staff of aid agency Action Contre la Faim in the island's east last year, the worst attack against humanitarian workers in memory.

Pera,
So you can't name any??? It is a wise decision rather than naming someone and finding that he'she is same or worst than mahinda mama!
Your question is rather silly. Lee Hsien Loong or Bill Clinton could do the job. You are trying to say that the task is impossible but it is not! There is never any excuse for incompetency other than incompetency itself. BILL Clinton led the US through 8 years of economic boom; George Bush has led the US through 6 yrs of close to economic recession. One fellow is competent, the other is a lazy bum.
we also LOVE to have that. thats why we 'change' our leader every 5 yrs... however going bananas and uttering pessimistic oaths won't help no?
now think from the Tamil mans point ..who is living under VP untill VP is dead?????
Yes, Sinhalese people are too passive. They don't elect responsible leaders. The Bandaranaikes and Rajapakse's should be chased out of the country or imprisoned. I am not uttering 'pessimistic oaths.' After 26 years, there is no point complaining about terrorism... either finish the war or settle, and do it quickly. We will never have politicians who are responsible enough to fight the war the right way, therefore, it is best to go for some kind of political settlement. That is common sense. At some point, it will happen anyway, so why oppose it to begin with?
of course...we see that not only in Sri Lanka, whole world. The cheif of IMF had to resign.. Japanese minister for Agriculture took his life...so we are NOT alone...
The IMF is not a country, it is an institution. Anyway, Mr. Wolfowitz resigned - whoever takes his place will not be corrupt. Japan? Japan is one of the ten richest nations. It doesn't beg for aid. This minister took his life because he felt SORRY about what he had done. When has a Sri Lankan minister confessed to his crimes? Yes, we are alone, man... we are the only country in the history of the world that fights a civil war for 26 years without a draft! We are alone in our stupidity, you are correct!
we have to upgrade uorselves. we have to train our people to be efficient and non-corrupt. I think it is better than just hooting and NOT offering any solution!
NOTHING is possible if the government is so corrupt. Government corruption is worse than the LTTE. The day the Sinhalese wake up to that reality, it will be a new dawn for Sri Lanka. |

Bhairav:
Do you guys really think you are fighting a war on this forum? This is a discussion forum where you poste with an assumed identity. You don't have to be scared of anybody. Besides, you don't achieve anything here either. Don't ever think you can get eelam by posting counter arguments on this forum. |

Kandyan, your applause of Bill Clinton is pathetic if it is not so funny! You are probably only watching CNN and the other liberal news media. Bill Clinton's errors with dealing with terrorism in the past has been highlighted several times. His response when the SS Cole was hit and the Kenyan embassy bombed. Ms. Madeleine Albright was his Secy of State who made the stupidest decisions re. N. Korea which allowed them to continue their nuclear activities. Recently Mr. Berger, a high-up Clinton guy was found to have destroyed highly confidential documents which he had removed from the archives in his pockets and then destroyed them. Mr. Berger said he did by mistake though he had deliberately chopped them up to pieces and destroyed them. The docs. apparently linked the clinton admin. to the flaws of 9/11.
The clintons have been called efficient liars by people who formerly knew them. Hillary is accused of stealing White house furniture when they left the WH and shady stock deals. The only thing is that she is able to get away with much as she is crafty enough to stay one step ahead of the law. Bill clinton is of course morally a lost cause but he is intent on coming back to the WH so the pair will stick together - with the image that they are the most happy couple on earth. His womanizing has been so commonly spoken of - it is now a joke!
Bush is not a popularity freak and is not interested in his ratings. He is doing what is best for the US but of course you get the liberal, anti-Christian, gay lobbies etc who are trying to tarnish his image. Recently when the plot to blow up JFK was exposed so many officials praised the strategies put together after 9/11 for the various agencies to work together and share information even with overseas agencies, which they clearly said were absent during the clinton era... Widen your media coverage. Read more balanced stuff like drudgereport.com and perhaps watch foxnews if you have access to it. |
