Two suspects arrested for brutal murder are mysteriously killed in Sri Lanka
Wednesday, 23 May 2007 - 11:51 PM SL Time

Two of the suspects taken into custody for brutal murders that shocked the country a few days ago have been mysteriously killed.

Four houses belonging to the families of the suspects were also burnt by angry mobs yesterday.

Two of the suspects in the brutal murder are prominent supporters of the Marxist People`s Liberation Front (JVP).

An entire family of six with three children was hacked, and one rescued child of 12 years was found in a blood bath on the morning of May 19. The little girl, who had been raped, is still in critical condition, hospital sources said.

A prolonged land dispute paved the way for the brutal murders, police said.

Colombo will shun peace, until LTTE demonstrates futility of military option- Gajendrakumar
Wednesday, 23 May 2007 - 8:51 PM SL Time
Tamilnet
Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian and Member of the Parliamentary Consultative Committees for Constitutional affairs, in an interview with TamilNet Tuesday, said that Sri Lanka will not pursue a political solution until it finds itself unable to prosecute a military solution, and the only option open for peace is for the LTTE to demonstrate that Colombo`s military agenda will not succeed. Gajendrakumar added that this unfortunate reality is the direct result of the International community`s demonstrated unwillingness to stop the Sri Lanka Government from proceeding with the military agenda.

Gajendrakumar pointed out that US and UK, while curtailing some development aid due to the worsening human rights record of the Sri Lanka Government, continue with their military assistance to the Government. `How is one to interpret this other than as support for the government`s military approach?... Then I ask you, why should the Sri Lankan Government change its ways?,` he said.

UNP Reformists` constitutional proposals drop `unitary` status
Wednesday, 23 May 2007 - 5:42 AM SL Time

`We do not believe in the provision of Unitary State at all, but will recognize sovereignty, territorial integrity and economic unity,` Group Leader Karu Jayasuriya told a media conference at Sethsewana yesterday.

The set of constitutional proposals by the UNP Reformists` Group for providing a stronger devolution package was handed over to Prof.Wiswa Warnapala and SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena yesterday. In their package the group has dropped the demand to maintain the unitary status of the constitution.

Jayasuriya said that since 1948 Sri Lanka had been stagnating politically, economically, culturally and socially. Paying lip service to national issues the then rulers had driven the country backward. The UNP Democratic Group would denounce terrorism and racialism which had been a canker to the country. The Group would always recognize the identity of different communities without weakening the common Sri Lanka identity, he said.

LTTE training complex destroyed; Blackout in Wanni
Tuesday, 22 May 2007 - 10:59 PM SL Time
SLAF MiG and K`Fir fighter jets pounded with precision air strikes at a pre-identified LTTE training complex south of Mankulama, 25 miles north west of Vavuniya, on Tuesday the 22nd of May.

The air sorties were carried out in the early hours at 6.45a.m. According to aerial reconnaissance images the LTTE training complex was destroyed into rubbles following the air bombardment. The SLAF fighter jets made successive sorties dropping heavy payloads into the terrorist training complex, which was later surrounded with clouds of debris, the defence officials confirmed.

Meanwhile, reliable sources said that the training complex was believed to be a regular visiting site of the LTTE Police Chief Nadeshan. It is not yet confirmed whether Nadeshan was present at the site, though some high profile terrorists were said to sustain severe injuries, the sources further added.

Sri Lanka sinks in to lawlessness
Tuesday, 22 May 2007 - 9:37 PM SL Time
Cases of murder, abduction, disappearance and intimidation surface almost daily in Sri Lanka as the South Asian nation appears to be sliding into lawlessness and war.

With a truce between the government and the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in tatters and peace talks long since abandoned, rights workers and the media fear the situation is spiralling out of control.

The government is pressing for a military victory over the Tigers, and a series of tit-for-tat clashes have left heavy casualties on both sides -- as well as discrepancies over the true body count.

But away from the front lines, bloodshed is just as frequent and usually involves civilians, although it is seldom clear who is behind the day-to-day violence.

Mr. Wickremesinghe told Parliament this could be done through a fresh cabinet paper, regardless of the recent Supreme Court ruling on the matter.

`The Cabinet can increase the security of any Minister after conducting a threat assessment`, he said recalling that the same process was adopted to increase the security strength of President J.R. Jayewardene after his retirement.

ICRC withdraws from Omanthai again
Wednesday, 23 May 2007 - 5:45 AM SL Time
Just a day after it returned to the Omanthai crossing point, the ICRC again withdrew from the area last evening, following LTTE firing which hit an area close to an ICRC point, Military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said.

He said a white van with two youths had come to the military checkpoint in the evening from the direction of Kilinochchi. `According to those men, the Tigers did not allow them to cross over to the government areas prompting them to flee,` he said. Later the Tigers had fired at the speeding van, but the shells had missed their target and fallen near an ICRC point, he added, quoting the two youths.

Curbs on mobile phones in B`caloa region
Wednesday, 23 May 2007 - 5:43 AM SL Time
The government has been forced to suspend cellular phone services to the Batticaloa region as part of the efforts to deny information to the LTTE.

A senior military official said this was necessary to prevent the enemy from receiving information relating to ongoing action in the area. On and off suspension of services would be essential, he said, expressing regret over inconvenience caused to the subscribers. `But we have no option,` he said, adding, `Over the years, the cellular phone has become a vital tool in the hands of the LTTE.`

Disconnection of cellular phone services in Batticaloa district since March 6 has resulted in many cellphone related activities being suspended causing loss of employment for the repair technicians as well as those involved in sale of cell phones, SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) cards and refill cards, pro-LTTE Tamil Net reported on Tuesday.

Japan can help if only Lanka desires: Akashi
Wednesday, 23 May 2007 - 5:49 AM SL Time
Japanese Peace Envoy for Sri Lanka Yasushi Akashi giving an exclusive interview to the Daily Mirror at his private office in Tokyo on Tuesday said Japan was `mindful` of the human rights situation in Sri Lanka and was concerned, irrespective of whether the violations were by the LTTE, the government or any other party.

`We are `very observant` of the human rights situation in Sri Lanka,` he noted, pointing out that the Sri Lankan government too was taking this seriously.

Japan was closely watching the independent international body appointed to inquire into human rights violations and hoped it would expedite its work to ensure that the rule of law is upheld in Sri Lanka, he said.

More proposals from UNP group
Wednesday, 23 May 2007 - 5:47 AM SL Time
A dissident group of Sri Lanka`s main opposition have produced another set of proposals aiming at resolving the national question.

Group leader, minister Karu Jayasuriya, told journalists that the all the members of the group agreed to devolve power according to 13 amendment to the constitution.

The 13 amendment, brought in after the Indo-Sri Lanka accord, devolved certain centralised powers into Provincial Councils.

Federal `mythology`

Asked by BBC Sandeshaya whether the group supports federal or unitary style of constitution, Minister Rajitha Senarathne said those concepts are `old mythologies` that are creating more dissent than resolving the matters.

There was no particular mention on many Tamil parties` demand to merge the northern and eastern districts.

The JVP yesterday charged that the sale of Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) shares to a Malaysian company would ensure a certain government member 10 million US dollars in commissions.

Speaking in Parliament, Party group leader Wimal Weerawansa declined to name the member, despite promptings to do so from the UNP, but said many government members would be pleased if his identity were revealed.

Mr. Weerawansa also requested a full day debate on the matter, while the UNP called for the setting up of a Parliamentary Select Committee to probe the issue.

Counterfeit currency found in restaurant
Tuesday, 22 May 2007 - 5:32 AM SL Time
A special CID team, along with the Anuradhapura Police, raided a restaurant in Anuradhapura town yesterday and recovered 14 counterfeit Rs 500 currency notes. The restaurant was owned by a woman. She, her son and an employee of the restaurant were taken into custody along with the counterfeit currency

Police said the discovery was only the tip of an iceberg. Preliminary investigations point to this being a long standing operation where millions have changed hands. Police suspect that similar detections made elsewhere in the country, in the recent past, probably originated from this restaurant.

On questioning, the woman said that she received her supplies from Polonnaruwa and had given a telephone number and address. A special police team has been dispatched to Polonnaruwa for further investigations.

All horses hide something in their bellies
Monday, 21 May 2007 - 10:48 AM SL Time
Sri Raman makes an interesting analysis of the situation in South Asia in his article in truthout, `Trojan Horse as a South Asian Theme`, reproduced on this page today. Examining political chaos in Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan, he argues, there are sinister forces at work with a hidden military agenda?a Trojan horse hiding the military in its belly. All three nations, he argues, are being made to wait for a military saviour or solution.

The Trojan horse in Bangladesh, Sri Raman believes, `was a victorious anti-corruption vehicle, welcomed as such by wide sections of people in the initial phase`. In Nepal, the increasing ethnic disturbances are expected `to provide a return route for overthrown King Gajendra, who still enjoys overt support from the Nepal army`s top brass`. It is argued that `an engineered bloodbath` could provide an opportunity for General Musharraf to perpetuate his rule, in Pakistan, where it is said `military generals and fanatical clerics have been symbiotically linked in politics, often needing and helping one another `attain their respective goals`.

Politics, economics and the stock market
Sunday, 20 May 2007 - 5:24 AM SL Time
Last week`s stock market crash, when billions of rupees of market capitalization was wiped off the Colombo bourse burning many gamblers who saw the share market as a better way of making money than backing horses, has many lessons not only for market players but also for the country as a whole. The bourse was overheated and in such a situation what analysts call an ``adjustment`` was inevitable. While few would have predicted that it would have been as nasty and brutish as it was, all players will hope it will be short and take comfort from Friday`s upturn when a little lost ground was regained. The fact that the bourse, while in the throes of a crash, could also post the highest ever turnover in its history as it did on Thursday was very much to the good. Telekom Malaysia, owners of Dialog which has been doing very nicely in Sri Lanka`s telecommunication revolution, was able to find many foreign investors willing to take a small slice of the company at a very attractive price making the new record possible. They would not have done that if they regarded our country`s situation as hopeless.

Mourning for a mummy and other matters
Saturday, 19 May 2007 - 6:33 AM SL Time
In Sri Lankan folklore, there is a bovine king called Kekille, who is well known for his absurd judgments. Here is one: He once found a newly built wall around his palace warped. Furious, he sent for the mason concerned. The poor man pleaded for mercy and made a clean breast of what had really gone wrong. While building the royal wall, he said, he had been distracted by a buxom woman who used to go past him several times a day. He blamed her for the warped wall. The king, true to form, set him free and ordered that woman to be brought forthwith. Hauled up before him, she told the king that she had to make several trips past the palace to meet a goldsmith, who had failed to deliver her jewellery on time. She, too, was allowed to go. Finally, the goldsmith was put to death with no questions asked.

Search for another foreign coach for the Sri Lankan cricket team begins
Wednesday, 23 May 2007 - 5:59 AM SL Time
Sri Lanka Cricket started the search for the new coach from today and is expected to advertise internationally calling for applications from a highly qualified person.

Sri Lanka Cricket said that it would continue the policy of employing a foreign coach for the national cricket team amidst proposals from some veterans to appoint a local coach for the post.

Former coach Tom Moody last week turned down an offer from Sri Lanka Cricket for an extension of the contract. He is to return to Western Australia to coach the county team.

Moody was the fourth consecutive Australian coach of the Sri Lanka cricket team.

Australian Dav Whatmore guided Sri Lanka to a Cricket World Cup victory in 1996 while Moody took them to the runners-up position in the 2007 World Cup.

Pakistan amass a huge 313/9
Monday, 21 May 2007 - 10:47 AM SL Time
Pakistan posted a massive total of 313 for nine wickets after electing to bat first in the second one dayer at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi yesterday.

Their total reached as the Sri Lankan fielders faulted heavily when moving on to take the catches that came their way. Overall it was a pathetic display when talking about fielding. If the fielding of Sri Lankans were upto standards the Pakistanis would have never gone to reach a big total.

Lankan skipper used five bowlers to halt the run flow but failed to stop them. Sri Lanka made three changes to the side that lost the first game on Friday bringing in Malinda Warnapura, Dilhara Fernando and Ruchira Perera in place of Sanath Jayasuriya, Lasith Malinga and Ishara Amarasinghe.
