In the first study of its kind, Sri Lanka has placed 111th on the Global Peace Index.

The Index is a ranking of 121 countries - from Algeria to Zimbabwe - listed according to their peacefulness. It was compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit and is comprised of a broad range of 24 indicators measuring both the internal and external peacefulness of nations.

The publication of the Global Peace Index comes just a week before the leaders of the world`s richest countries gather for the G8 summit in Germany.

The Index has won the backing of an influential and distinguished group of supporters including the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Queen Noor of Jordan, former United States President Jimmy Carter, and former Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank Professor Joseph Stiglitz, who are today calling for an increased focus on peace.

The Index is topped by Norway, but the rankings show that even among the G8 countries, there are significant differences in the peacefulness of nations. Japan ranks the highest at 5th; Canada (8th) also falls in the top ten; and Germany ranks just outside (12th). Italy (33rd), France (34th), and the United Kingdom (49th) rank in the top half of the table. However, the USA is listed 96th and Russia is in the bottom five (118).

The Global Peace Index reveals that countries that had a turbulent time for parts of the 20th century, such as Ireland (4th) and Austria (10th), have emerged as peace leaders in the 21st century.

Oh believe me, 111th palace or 11th place, what is the big difference?

Still there will be people who have something negative to say about the SL ranking.

You all will see it just under this post.

I heard that NZ is the cleanest, greenest country in the world. Australia's crime rate is increasing. Some schoolboys were arrested last week in 2 or 3 suburbs and towns in New South Wales after it was revealed that they were planning to go on a shooting spree in their schools, in imitation of the Virginia Tech lunatic.

Imperator,

You are correct. In addition in Australia racial violence too exhists. Last year there were some violent attacks against the Lebanese muslim community in Sydney.

Racism is a simmering reality beneath the surface of the Aussi community. I have experienced it personally many times over.

However all Aussi people are not that. I would put it that around 40% are racists over all. But in some States it's worse than the others.

Kiwi,

I'm glad that I haven't experienced any racism here yet. But I saw in one letter to the editor of a newspaper here, an Aussie schoolgirl with a Chinese heritage said that she & her other Chinese friends were one day subjected to taunts of 'Go back to your own country' (a favourite among the racist idiots here) by well-dressed commuters on a train. It was disgusting to read.

As for the arrested schoolboys I mentioned, two of them were studying in a school that's walking distance from the house I'm living in at the moment! One of my cousins here is attendng that school. Thank goodness those maniacs wre caught. Both were 15 years old. Shows the state of things here.

Pfft...new zealand will forever remain the whipping boy of australia (except when it comes to rugby). the kiwis stream into australia like cubans. if the tasman sea weren't so bloody long, you'd bet they'd be swimming across!

And as for racism against muslims, that's mostly self inflicted. the lebanese have iconic status in australia because of their loutish, hoon behaviour.

lets not just bash whites all the time. every community is racist. the trick is to live 'quietly' and do nothing to offend the neighbours.
