Decrease in foreigners overstaying in the island.

Following the Implementation of additional regulations for foreign passport holders visiting Sri Lanka, the number of visa offenders has been reduced.

According to Immigration and Emigration Department sources, the number of foreigners over staying their visas had reduced ten fold. The major contributory factor for the decline was the imposing of fines which effects from 1st March 2007.

Prior to the imposing of new penalty, the number of illegal immigrants residing in the country was estimated as one thousand persons. But now, latest records unveil that the number has decreased in to hundred.

According to police, most of those who had violated the law were those who had fund employment here in restaurants, small hotels and factories run by

Private sector employers. Many of the illegal migrant workers were arriving from south Asian countries also with a considerable number of persons from the countries such as Ukraine, Russia, China and Thailand. They were secretly employed as sex workers.

Previously, the sex workers adapted in to a system of leaving to a country close to Sri Lanka when their visas expired and returned to Sri Lanka obtaining new visa. But presently, the immigration authorities and the police are keeping a close tap on such people.

Foreigners visiting Sri Lanka, on tourist visas are required to prove that they are capable of spending US Dollar 1500/= per month.

According to the controller of Immigration and Emigration, Mr. P.B. Abeykoon, a Foreigner overstaying his visa for a period of one week is required to leave the country. If the overstaying period is between 8 to 30 days, they will be charged with a fine of US Dollars 25 and deported while those who have overstayed up to 30-90 days will be fined US Dollars 50 and deported. Those who have overstayed for more than 90 days will be fined US Dollars 100 and deported.

The Government has adopted a liberalized policy on visas and people from 79 countries except a few Latin American and African countries are issued visas on arrival in Sri Lanka. Citizens from SAARC countries and many Western countries enjoy this opportunity.
