Known as 'Serendip' to Arab geographers, the island fell under Portuguese and Dutch influence and finally came under British rule when it was called Ceylon.
Timeline
There is a long-established Tamil minority in the north and east. The British also brought in Tamil labourers to work the coffee and tea plantations in the central highlands, making the island a major tea producer.
But the majority Buddhist Sinhalese community resented what they saw as favouritism towards the mainly-Hindu Tamils under British administration.

we have done remarkably well than india, pakistan, bangladesh combined we are light years ahead than african nations. this despite lack of fuel resources or any mineral wealth.
The north tamils had everything, good universities, good economies, good life....LTTE had to destroy everything, bring down the tamils in the north, chase all of them out of the country to become earners for LTTE.
you had it all..now what do you have?
show me your proof your homeland, there are kovils all round the country. buddhists are the main contributers...more than any tamil group!
we are a nation that lives in harmony...we dont kill 1000000 like the indians do during problems.
as I have said this island belongs to all of us, the children who are dying because of the lankat jok prabha and thugs are killing our countries future.
