A RAW STORY
The alleged sinking of an Indian fishing trawler in Maldivian Seas has created much hype in the Sinhalese media.
The story in a nutshell, is that, an Indian fishing trawler by the name of Sri Krishna with twelve crew members was hijacked by members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
Eleven of the crew were taken hostage to Vanni, while one was kept on board and the trawler was being used to transfer arms and ammunitions to the LTTE.
Ultimately, the vessel was sunk in Maldivian Seas, the Indian on board surrendered and four LTTE members were captured.
For those of us who indulge in the twists and turns of Tamil cinema, the above story would seem fairly standard. Not Maniratnam range perhaps, but honestly the director hadn't failed to twitch lids.
However, real life is far from the idyllic world of Tamil cinema, where logic only plays a trivial role.
With the above story, I had been pondering on certain points for the past few days.
My first thought was why aren't the LTTE using their own trawlers to transport arms? When transporting hardware worth so many millions of dollars, the best way to do this would be with very minimal attention. Surly, the LTTE would have mastered this over the past 20 years.
Of course THE RAW STORY wants me to believe otherwise. In fact, the LTTE hijacked the trawler so that Indian fishermen and Coast Guard would be on the look out for it. The LTTE wanted the gun running trawler to be sought for and found.
My second thought was that why on earth did the LTTE keep an Indian fisherman on board the trawler? Surely they would have wanted the pick-up location of the arms to be kept a secret.
Again THE RAW STORY tells me what to believe. The Indian fisherman was kept on board so that he can note the pick-up location, the route taken by the trawler and ultimately act as an independent witness to the authorities on the story that the trawler was being used by non-other than the LTTE for gunrunning purposes.
Finally, I thought why were the eleven fishermen men taken captive, taken to Vanni and then freed? After all they had done no wrong, and even if they were being used as means to an end, would it not have been much simpler to kill them or free them?
To have done that would have been to rob the cherry off the cake. THE RAW STORY's climax is the meeting of the freed fishermen, with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister who had always kept public his sympathies for the Tamils of Eelam. The fishermen were abducted, taken to Vanni and ultimately freed to tell the Chief Minister what a horrible bunch the Tamils of Eelam really are.
I was waiting till Sunday in the hope that Col Harihran would give some behind the scene narration. Thus far, to my disappointment, no such relating has unfolded on the World Wide Web.
