The Omanthai entry/exit point will reopen today after both the LTTE and the military gave written security guarantees to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), ICRC spokesman Davide Vignatti told the Daily Mirror.
LTTE sources also confirmed the re-opening of Omanthai today after it had given security guarantees following a meeting between the ICRC and the Vavuniya LTTE political head S. Gnanam in rebel-controlled Uliyankulam, Vavuniya yesterday.
At the meeting, the LTTE has said attacks across the border in Vavuniya occurred every time the ICRC was not present at the crossing point after dark. The rebels had urged the ICRC to look into this concern at its meetings with the military.
The Omanthai entry/exit point was closed last week following an exchange of heavy shelling between government troops and the LTTE resulting in civilian movement and aid flow to and from rebel-controlled Killinochchi coming to a standstill.
However the crossing point was opened for a short period on Saturday to facilitate the transfer of 9 bodies of LTTE cadres killed in the Vavuniya confrontation to Killinochchi. According to the ICRC 24 civilians were also transported between the Omanthai crossing point during this period.
Both the government and the LTTE, last week, blamed each other for the closure of the crossing point while the ICRC sought security guarantees for its staff who withdrew from Omanthai owing to the security threat posed by the confrontations in the area. The ICRC has to be present for the Omanthai entry/exit point to remain open.Last week, the military requested the ICRC to hold talks with the LTTE and reopen the Omanthai entry/exit point soon. `We are ready to re-open the checkpoint, but we can`t do it until ICRC agrees. Therefore we asked ICRC to take up the matter with the Tigers as thousands of people are suffering` military Spokesman Prasad Samarasinghe told the Daily Mirror.
