`Amnesty` for Sri Lankan prisoners
Monday, 21 May 2007 - 8:51 AM SL Time

A senior Sri Lankan minister says Jordanian authorities agreed to offer an amnesty for Sri Lankan prisoners.

Minister in charge of Foreign Employment Promotion, Keheliya Rambukwella, told journalists in Amman that many Sri Lankans serving in Jordanian prisons will soon be able to return home.

Minister Rambukewella is in Amman as a member of President Rajapaksa`s official delegation to G11 summit.

King Abbullah is hosting the newly-formed G11 summit that is formed by 11 developing countries.

Lakhanda journalist Sisira Munasinghe told BBC Sandeshaya that nearly 55,000- 65,000 Sri Lankans work in Jordan.

Some Sri Lankan workers, he said, have left their employers due to visa problems and intimidation. These workers are not allowed to go back until they pay a penalty charged per day for the period they illegally stayed in Jordan.

King Abdullah has offered them a period of amnesty after a special request made by President Rajapaksa, Munasinghe told bbc.

The value of a citizen of a society is indeed defined by that society. It is time we give value and respect to our own. Rightly done Mr. Minister.

Amnesty' for Sri Lankan prisoners

There are more important things that need attention, not about criminals going free.

Isn't there anything more worthy of discussion?
