Sixth Asian Youth Volleyball Championship, conducted by the Asian Volleyball Federation will commence at Badminton Stadium of Pethaling which is situated 15 kilometres west off Kuala Lampoor, Malaysia, today.
Sri Lanka, drawn in group `B` will meet Thailand in the evening today in the eleven nation competition. While Malaysia, the hosts and the new comers in the tournament will encounter Hong Kong, Korea will meet Chinese Taipei today.
The first round matches of the tournament are conducted in two groups. While Malaysia, India, Hong Kong, Japan and Australia are playing in group `A`, Sri Lanka are grouped in `B` along with tough teams, namely, Iran, Korea, China, Chinese Taipei and Thailand.
Sri Lanka aiming at entering the top eight teams has to beat at least two teams in the group stage matches. Considering the strengths of the tough teams in the group Sri Lanka could be hopeful of a relatively positive result in today`s match.
Sri Lanka met a Thailand team last some eight years ago and the coach of Sri Lanka team Channa Jayasekara said that though the team had no past experience encountering Thailand they were ready to give a tough fight.
Meanwhile, the organisers of the tournament are facing a huge financial crisis. From an estimated cost of five hundred thousand Ringitt, organises have only managed to accumulate 30 %, it is reported. Though there were early planes to accommodate players at luxury hotels, organisers have opted for other hotels in the face of the financial crisis.
