MANNAR: TIGER TERRORISTS? ABORTIVE ATTEMPTS to keep civilians surrounding east of MADU and MANNAR areas under siege received another blow during the past couple of hours when troops confronted pockets of Tiger terrorists while they were moving about with heavy weapons, Security Forces confirmed on Thursday (17).

At least fourteen Tiger terrorists lost their lives and a dozen received injuries as a result of heavy fighting in the areas east of MADU late Wednesday (16) evening when Tigers unsuccessfully tried to break into cleared areas held by the Security Forces.

Many of those terrorists killed or injured were trying to move in or out from various civilian-dominated areas with a view to diverting the focus on security concerns elsewhere, but the Security Forces having realized their losing strategies fought back effectively.

Those latest attacks on the troops during the whole of Wednesday (16) starting at about 9.45 a.m. were proved another disaster unto themselves as the civilians overwhelmingly supported the troops providing intelligence and information as the confrontations and searches were on.

Troops during the confrontations received assistance of the Artillery troops and chased the Tiger terrorists further into northern hideouts.

The subsequent clearing operation conducted by troops later recovered three LTTE dead bodies and three T-56 weapons along with ammunition left behind by terrorists.

The dead bodies of LTTE terrorists have been sent to the VAVUNIYA hospital for delivery to the ICRC.
