Can two mobile phones boil an egg?
Tuesday, 15 May 2007 - 6:34 PM SL Time

This is bit old, but still interesting...

************************************************

It looks like Russian media is not very different from our own!!

While local media is full of stories about Buddha rays and aliens, two journalists from Komsomolskaya Pravda have come up with a very interesting story about how to boil an egg using two mobile phones.

What they have done is placing an egg between two mobile phones `talking to each other`. Viola, after 65 minutes they have found the egg is fully boiled!!!!!!!!!!!

The original story appeared at http://www.kp.ru/daily/23694.4/52233/print/ dated April 21, 2006.

For those who do not understand Russian, there are several English translations in the net. You can find one at http://www.crorepixels.com/egg.htm

Sinhala weekly Lankadeepa carried this story yesterday. (Aug 6, 2006) Pl see the attachment.

I have not repeated this experiment. After so many years I am not very good in my Physics and Electronic engineering fundamentals too. However, according to what I find from the web, the energy dissipation of a microwave oven is in the range of 750 - 1,500 Watt, while for a mobile phone it is less than 2 Watt. So a mobile phone cannot really do what a micro wave oven does.

Also one does not have to be an electronics engineer to understand even if you keep two mobile phones face to face, they do not `talk to each other` directly. Instead, both would be talking to the towers. As far as I know, the mobile phones are emitting energy not in a particular direction, but every direction. So only a fraction of that 2 Watt is used to boil the egg.

My common sense tells me this cannot happen. (I had the same feeling when I heard about Buddha rays and aliens) If I were to reproduce this story, I would have been extremely careful. But not all journalists and bloggers are worried abiut the facts. For them, it is a very good story. So one finds this story all over the net.

I am pretty sure nothing will happen to the egg if you repeat the experiment. I will be surprised even if the egg gets a bit hot.

In a positive perspective, I think this is an ideal opportunity for a phone company to repeat the experiment in public and debunk the myth. It will be an excellent opportunity for publicity.

Over to you, techies.
