According to Jaffna Human Rights Commission (HRC) representatives, there were 20 abductions in January, 8 in February, 33 in March, and 19 in April have either been abducted or gone missing in the last 4 months of this year. 72 persons have sought protective custody in Jaffna prison through HRC Jaffna for fear of death, abduction by the SLA and armed groups, the HRC added.

Habeas corpus pettitions were filed in 1996 and 1997, but have not yet made it to court. Efforts to release those abducted, allegedly by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and collaborating paramilitary members, have also failed due to the inadequate response of the law enforcement authorities, civil society sources in Jaffna said.

On Wednesday, an appeal was made to United States Ambassador Richard Boucher who was in Jaffna, by a mother whose son had been abducted.

The Jaffna Human Rights Commission (HRC) said it cannot do anything beyond its mandate of maintaining statistics of abductions and forcible disappearance, HRC representatives said.

US will continue helping Lanka to fight terror - Boucher
Manjula Fernando

COLOMBO: Visiting US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Richard Boucher said the US would continue to help Sri Lanka to fight LTTE terrorism.

Hosting a press conference at the Cinnamon Grand, Colombo, to wrap up his three-day tour of Sri Lanka from May 8, Boucher said: ?We recognise that people of Sri Lanka continue to face the threat of terrorism. There is a threat from the Tigers, the organisation continues to be a terrorist group that recruits child soldiers, extorts money, kills people, blows up buses...?

When your compare all what Boucher has said as reported in the local and international media and considering that he was in Colombo only for 1 1/2 days and the meetings in total lasted only a few hours. This guy should have been a speed talker.

Or you can ignore all the garbage written in the local media and only look at the foreign media.

Abductions/ kidnappings should not have any place in a decent society who ever does it.

While LTTE has no right to complain to any one about human rights as they have kidnapped 6006 kids ( as per UNICEF) and abducted /killed more than 5000 tamils political opponents over a period of 2 years. Going by these statistics it is obvious the the LTTE is the main culprit of violations.

The HRC also highlight the fact that the LTTE 'allow tamils to open mouth only to eat!'

The GOSL too should not stoop to a level of terrorists by directly or indirectly responsible for these crimes.

80 abductions in one month in Jaffna

1300 abductions in 12 months.

This is why Mahinda Rajapakse keep the criminal Duglas Devananda in his cabinet.

In the east human rights violations are even worse but who listens?

Karuna was supported by SLAF and the military against the complaints made by Rauf Hakeem MP. Now Karuna is chased out of the country by his leiftinent Pallaiyan. We prey Allah the same fate befell on all other terrorists including LTTE.

There is no smoke without fire, in the late 80s lot of Sinhalese youths were tortured and killed by the GOSL but no one dared to speak against even the so-called HRW. I wonder in fairness where was the justice then?

These are self inflicted injuries, no compromise, no solution. Sad but that is the bitter truth!

This is the way they got rid of southern uprising(s). Nothing to be amazed about, sooner or later this will come to an end with the elimination of the terrorism.

I think we should close down the country and finish the war within 3 months like Premadasa did when JVP made havoc in the country. Things will be all better after we eliminate VP

Saint,

How are you machang? Did you visit my blog? there are some good song :)

Yep, I agree this is how ranjan Wijeratne finished the JVP uprising, but I think those days no HRW came to speak about human rights. I am baffled now about this kind of standpoint.

Sri Lankan government troops 'eliminated' more than 100000 non Tamils in two attempts, when they tried to change the government illegally.

So this 80 in 4months is not the statistic, which makes one to raise eyebrows, at least.
