Sri Lanka rupee at new low, stocks fall on war fears

COLOMBO, May 7 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka's rupee fell to a new life low on Monday and shares ended weaker as concerned investors looked for signs of whether a new chapter in the island's civil war will deepen or ease, dealers said.

The rupee closed at a new all-time low of 110.95/111.00 per dollar, compared to Friday's close of 110.80/110.83 -- which was in turn the latest in a string of new life lows.

'It is basically because of importer demand for dollars and concerns about the security situation,' said one currency dealer. 'The Central Bank will not be comfortable with the rupee at these levels, so we expect there may be some selling pressure coming through.'

'The worrying thing is the market liquidity -- about 20 billion rupees surplus,' the dealer addded. 'We believe there may be a hidden balance of payments crisis.'

He predicted the rupee could recover ground against the dollar if resistance at 111.25 holds.

The Colombo All Share index closed 1.22 percent weaker at 2,753.32 points after falling 0.49 percent on Friday, as fretting retail investors sold second tier stocks.

Sri Lanka restricts flights after rebel raids
(AFP)

7 May 2007

COLOMBO - Sri Lanka has restricted domestic flights and banned amphibious aircraft from using irrigation reservoirs following Tamil Tiger air attacks, officials said on Monday.

The military banned Sri Lanka?s national carrier, Sri Lankan Airlines, from operating a lucrative domestic service of Single Otter aircraft using reservoirs for take-off and landing, a defence ministry official said.

The move was part of measures taken by the security forces to deal with the new threat of air attacks by Tamil Tiger rebels who demonstrated their air capability in March by using light aircraft to bomb targets here.

Foreign tourists were using the air-taxi service to travel to a golf course and upmarket hill resorts, instead of travelling on the highly congested local roads.

Sri Lanka has already announced the closure of its only international airport starting Thursday for six hours each night after four daring night time bombing raids by the Tigers.

LTTE landmine kills three STF men

A powerful landmine detonated by the LTTE killed three STF personnel and injured four others in Batticaloa, while seven Tigers were killed elsewhere in clashes in the north and east regions yesterday, the military said.

They said that a tractor carrying STF troops was caught in an LTTE explosion at Kokadicholai in Batticaloa when the tractor was passing the Manalpitiya junction. The injured were rushed to the Batticaloa Hospital.

All these troops killings are happening in GOSL Weeravipushanas controlled or captured Batticaloa......Jayawewa

North of Madhu, Army troops on foot patrol were fired upon by the LTTE compelling troops to retaliate killing five Tigers and injuring many others seriously, the military said. Troops suffered no casualties. In another development, since last morning, the LTTE started firing mortars towards troops at forward defence lines west of Omanthai in Vavuniya.

Troops retaliated and one soldier was seriously injured while three others suffered minor injuries in the incident.
