Lanka to allay airline fears over rebel air attacks
Thursday, 3 May 2007 - 9:59 AM SL Time

The Sri Lankan government said Tuesday that it will have talks with at least three international airlines who have either suspended their services to the island or changed their schedules for fears of further attacks by Tamil Tiger rebels.

Renton de Alwis, the chairman of the Ceylon Tourist Board, said that talks would be held with Emirates, Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines.

`We will have talks so that services could be continued during daylight hours,` Alwis said.

Airlines began to entertain security fears after the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) carried out their second air raid last Sunday on the city of Colombo and suburbs.

In the first attack on March 26, the rebels bombed the Sri Lanka Air Force base adjoining the international airport.

Cathay Pacific and Emirates have totally suspended their Colombo services, while Singapore Airlines has said that all their Colombo arrivals and departures would be restricted to daylight time flights.

Alwis said talks with Emirates and Cathay Pacific would be aimed at facilitating the two services to shift to daylight time schedules.

The Tiger rebels are believed to be possessing at least two light aircraft, which the government said would be destroyed soon.

The activation of the air defence system forced the diversion of several airlines to the neighbouring south Indian airports on each of the two occasions the rebels carried out air raids on the city.

The rebel air capability has added a new dimension to the island`s long drawn-out separatist armed conflict that had claimed over 67,000 lives since the mid 1980s.

The military base and the civiliand side of the international airport has to be separated before anything.

With the present system, it looks like the civilian side is being used as a protective shield.

The day the flying tigers carry out an attack during day time, will bring everyone to their senses, hopefully! Till then assume the flying tigers cannot attack during the day, as most of us thought that the tigers will never take to the skies!

What will that solve? It only increases the fear factor and reduces tourism.

What will go up is
Unemployment,
Cost of living.
Number of empty hotels.
Cancelled reservations.
Frusteration,
Corruption,
Crime
Violance,
Robberies,
Extortions,
Prostitution,
AIDS,
Inflation,
Investors taking off ( Without planes)
The list goes on and on.

Just imagine, The SLRs is not worth the coin it is made of.
I do not know about the Bank notes.......

I always thought it was just a figure of speach when they say 'it is not worth the paper it is printed on'

Now I am seeing it in SL.
Nobody wants to exchange the SLRs for USD $.

Just do not make the SLRs at par with toilet paper.

Better keep some cash at home and some extra push bikes. Like in the late 80' if bombs go off in buses and banks they might park the buses and close the banks.

What state did you say this was?

Oh! Sovereign.
What are the basic essentials of a sovereign state? None to be found.
Thirty years of fighting looks like the countries economy. If you adjust for inflation you will get a negative growth.
