A very good article from Hindustan Times
http://www.hindustantimes.com/StoryPage/StoryPage.aspx?id=55a4b20b-79b3-4a8a-acef-b438cad5994c&&Headline=Tigers+exploit+flaws+in+Lankan+air+defence

Defence experts say that the SLAF lacks night operational capability and air to air fighting capability. The SLAF had never planned for a day when its planes would face opposition from enemy aircraft, although there had been a warning about such a threat by an US Pacific Command team in 2002, and by Iqbal Athas, the defence correspondent of Sunday Times since 2005.

The lack of night operational capability is glaring. Only the K-8s have it. But SLAF pilots don't have Night Vision Goggles (NVG). 'On Sunday, K-8s took to the air to intercept the LTTE's aircraft, but the intruders could not be found because it was too dark!' the expert pointed out.

This should cause concern in New Delhi and Washington also, since India and the US had taken the initiative in alerting the Sri Lankans about the potential threat from the skies. India had even provided, free of cost, a radar system for the defence of Colombo

Dear Eelamaya,
Look, Palalai is only 30 some KM from Muhamalai... once TAF squodrons, in a very dark night, start attacking Palalai, the whole GOSL deffense structure in Jaffna will collapse. The Comman structure of SLA will collapse... immediately, LTTE can enter the peninsular from Muhamalai and Poonerin.... so, by morning LTTE will be in control of Palalai and Jaffna.... of course there will be SLA units scattered, but without command structure... they have no option but surrender....

Lol, please tell me how many hours are there for one of your night?

Thanks.

Dear Eelamayaa,

My quote supports the capability that LTTe isusing and what state is failing.
- But it does not support any theory as doing all in ONE NIGHT.
- Also, if you think that state will NOT be weaponized with required items to face LTTE's these kind of attacks soon (how to attack small crafts in dark), you are an utter idiot.

ut anyway, please read that article. It has very good points and information, helpful to you both parties.

I think MR needs a separate air line for his travels, since he is going with hundreds of followers with him.

He went to Barbados also by Mihin-air.

God Bless Sri Lanka and poor Sri Lankans.

[Flying Tigers hold Sri Lanka to ransom
(AFP)

1 May 2007

COLOMBO - The new capability of the Tamil Tigers to carry out airborne attacks has not only made them a rarity among the world?s guerrilla outfits but has also badly shaken an entire country.

Sri Lanka?s defence ministry has acknowledged that the Tigers may be operating at least five light aircraft, used in three headline-grabbing raids against military and civilian targets over the past month.

The Tigers already possess an effective naval unit known as the Sea Tigers.

The Tiger air force may be minuscule compared with Sri Lanka?s fleet -- which comprises supersonic jets, spy planes and helicopter gunships -- but so far government forces have failed miserably in countering the flying Tigers.

?You can understand that the Tigers will use a light aircraft once, but there is something wrong when the air force is not able to take it out after three attacks,? said retired brigadier general Vipul Boteju.

The authorities switched off power to the capital of one million people when the Tigers carried out their third bombing raid here on Sunday, targeting two oil depots. The city was thrown into a state of panic.

In the wake of the attack, several international airlines announced they were cancelling or altering their flights to the island?s only international airport, whose runway is also used by Sri Lankan air force jets -- a prime target for the rebels.
