Does the public also have the ability of protecting from air strikes like Gotabhaya?

(LeN-2007 April 30, 8.00 pm) Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe questions whether defense secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse has taken adequate measures to protect the country from Air strikes like he has provided the route he travels in Daily from home to office.

Issuing a special statement drawing the attention of the government regarding the affect the recent air strikes have caused on the public Wickremesinghe says the UNP strongly condemns the attacks adding that any attack which targets government officials, public and economic locations should be condemned.

He also requests the government stop putting the country at stake while it plays its political games.

The statement adds that the country's security situation is worsening by the and that it wouldn't ease merely by condemning the attacks. The UNP also says the government shouldn?t be jubilant temporarily saying that the attacks were a failure because that is not the solution to the crisis.

It also says that President Rajapakse going to enjoy cricket was not the best of decisions as the country is in a terrible situation. The opposition leader says that first we should make sure that there was a country left for the players to play for. But says that unfortunately the Madamulana Chinthanaya doesn?t bother only what it wants.

But the UNP says that it wouldn't do any do any good to the country but assures to the public that it will under any circumstance fight to save the country and the people.

Two charged over Tamil fundraising

May 1, 2007 - 1:58PM

Police are refusing to rule out further arrests after apprehending two Melbourne men accused of raising money for a terrorist organisation via a tsunami relief charity.
Officers have charged a Mount Waverley man, 32, and a Vermont South man, 36,with three offences relating to being a member of a terrorist organisation and making funds available to a terrorist organisation. They are expected to face court this afternoon.

The arrests followed raids today across Melbourne and in Sydney as part of a two-year joint investigation by the Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police into claims charity groups were raising funds for Sri Lanka's Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam ? or Tamil Tigers.

Police conducted 10 raids on premises in Melbourne's east ? at Vermont, Glen Waverley, Mount Waverley, Dandenong, East Burwood ? and in the Sydney suburbs of Toongabbie and Paramatta.

Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe said the men were accused of running tsunami relief appeal to raise funds for the Tamil Tigers, allegedly duping people out of a substantial amount of money.

He said police would allege the men actively raised funds with the knowledge some of the money would be diverted to the Tamil Tigers to conduct operations in Sri Lanka.

If found guilty, the men face a maximum of 25 years in jail.

AFP National Counter Terrorism Manager Frank Prendergast said there was no evidence the men were planning terrorism activities in Australia.

'It will be alleged in court that these men are members of an organisation engaging in terrorist activity overseas and they have been providing active, material support to that group,'' he said.

He refused to rule out making further arrests following today's raids.
Commissioner Prendergast said the investigation began in January 2005 after police received information from the public.

The tigers air raids may be a joke for some sinhalese uneducated political leaders but economically it is not a joke but it is a biggest lost for country's foreign income .

Hey mate, this indicates your lack of knowledge in Sri Lankan economy. Sri Lanka's largest foreigh income source is labor in foreign countries. These boms will not affect negetively to that.

Nor does it have any impact on tea exports and apparel exports. It ONLY impacts on tourism, a small industry, already suffering. Anyway, this will not create 'lost of foreighn income' as you sya. Sorry to shatter your hopes.

Every little or big air raids of Tigers will not bring any good image of this Island.

Every little killing does not bring a good image to US. But the life and the business goes on right? By the way do you think that it brings a positive image to LTTE then?

Country has to buy very expensive materials to save the one and only international airport and it is impossible to accept that major foreign airlines companies' decision to cancell their flights to Colombo.

It is very much acceptible the decision to cancell flights for 72 HOURs. They have cancelled flights only for 72 hours. Not forever.

Unless sinhalese at least now come forward to accept the Indian modele of federal system for tamils to lookafter their own administration except foreign affairs, the situation will be more and more worse in the coming years

You are in no position to dictate people in Sri Lanka as to twhat they will do with their land. They are highly knowledgeable of what's right.

If we accept Indian model today, LTTE will build airports and buy MIGs and Kafirs freely. There is no political solution to LTTE. (There has to be a political solution to ethnic issues)LTTE does not represent tamil people. It is just a terrorist organisation.

How long the authorities can cut the power in Colombo and put the one millions people without electricity on each and every tigers air raid????

Until LTTE flies are detroyed. Well it's just a matter of time isn't it?

Now it is the turn of sinhalese people in the south to suffer like Tamils who have been suffering in the hands of al three arm forces.

In North & East Tamils suffer under LTTE. They flee to liberated areas away from LTTE. Have you ever heard that Tamils in Colombo flee to LTTE controlled ares?

Mate Colombo is ready to tolerate bigger things than just powercuts to destroy a terrorist organisation.

Fals or true information on Downing of Kfir or any air craft may be a joke for the defense ministry of rulers of this country but it is not a joke for the foreign commercial flights and foreign travellers.

Not to you, but to all others who belive in truth, it is a major joke.

Answer to the entire problem is destroying tigers. If you see the history army is always successful in destroying 95% of the LTTE. But alas they find difficult in destroying balance 5%. Ratwatte was able eliminate 95% of the LTTE and capture 95% of the land. But since he could not destroy the 5% . That 5% attacked and re captured 95% of the territory it lost in only 5 days. See even now army is in control of 95% of the East. But the balance 5% it will take probably 5 years to destroy. So Air force should not make the same mistake. They should destroy 5% of the TAF and wait. Because they could destroy 95% of the capability easily as history suggests. Do any Sri Lankan Patriots agree with my view or disagree?

If this tigers air raids continue the time will come to close down the airport definitively without any prior notice

Who are they here? Who can close down our Airport, LTTE, is it, another cracking joke!

and that is the begining of fall of this sinhalese government

He he he... fall of the government? Have you ever heard of that?

and may be an unavoidable partitiion of this Island under UN order

LTTE is being labled as terrorists is US, UK, Canada, India and so many other countries (but not in SL!-another joke), and you expect them to divide my motherland in UN and give North and East to LTTE terrorists.

Dream on man. That will never happen.

Police arrest two Australian men on terrorism charges
Associated Press, Mon April 30, 2007 23:59 EDT . MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) _ Two Australian men were arrested Tuesday for raising money for Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels, but were not planning an attack in Australia, police said.

The two men from the southern city of Melbourne were set to appear in court later Tuesday for fundraising with knowledge that the money would be used to support Tiger operations in Sri Lanka, police said.

''There is no evidence that these two men were planning to carry out a terrorist attack in Australia,'' Frank Prendergast, a senior counterterrorism officer with the Australian Federal Police, said in a statement.

''It will be alleged in court that these men are members of an organization engaging in terrorist activity overseas and they have been providing active, material support to that group,'' he said.
