Apr 30, Colombo: Sri Lankan naval troops were forced to open fire during a search operation on LTTE Tigers who were hiding in a Hindu temple, Amman Kovil in Velani, Kayts on Sunday (29) killing five Tigers, the military said.
The confrontation also seriously injured the priest of the temple who later succumbed to his injuries.
Following information received from civilians that some Tiger cadres were hiding inside the Hindu temple the naval troops were carrying out a search operation in the area when they met with Tiger fire from inside as they were about to enter the temple, defense officials said.
A subsequent search into the premises led to the recovery of three T-56 weapons, seven hand grenades, two cyanide capsules and a detonator.
All five Tiger dead bodies were to be delivered to the ICRC after initial investigations are over, the military said.
