Sri Lanka Air Force`s (SLAF`s) Israeli-built fast attack Kfir aircraft which took off from Katunayake Air Force base Monday on a bombing raid south of Ira`naimadu between around 3:00 p.m. spewed large cloud of smoke as the jet suspended the bombing raid and struggled to maintain height, traders in Kilinochchi who saw the troubled aircraft said. Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports from Colombo said a Kfir has failed to return to Katunayake base.
Military officials of the Liberation Tigers told TamilNet that their anti-aircraft defence system is automatically activated when an intrusive aircraft is detected in Ira`naimadu area.

Defence analysts have previously speculated that either the LTTE does not have Surface to Air Missiles (SAMs), or the types the LTTE possesses are outdated and cannot be used against supersonic fighters of the calibre of Kfirs.

Sri Lanka deploys Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) built Kfir bombers in air raids on LTTE territory.

The SLAF is known to own 12 Kfir bombers (two TC.2s, two C.7s and eight C.2s).

Kfir, meaning `Lion Cub` in Hebrew, is an all-weather, single seat multi-task combat aircraft based on a modified Dassault Mirage 5 airframe.

It doesn't matter whether the Kfir has been shot down or fallen down due to the mechanical problem (as usual), one bird is down.

Result is same, sort of!

You ask and you are going to get another July 1983 in July 2007.

Several houses hit, civilians injured

By Sandun A Jayasekera
Eight civilians in Wellawatta were injured in the mayhem that broke out following the LTTE aerial attack early last morning.

One of the injured persons, Tambaiah Aiyar Dharmapalan (50) of Fernando Rd, Wellawatta, explaining his harrowing experience to ?Daily Mirror? from his hospital bed at the Accident Ward of the Colombo South Hospital said, ?I was watching the Cricket World Cup final when lights went off around 1.30 a.m. with the sound of an explosion. It was pitch dark. I felt something hit on my chest and I even heard the sound of the object coming from the roof. I panicked when I felt I was bleeding and fainted. I came around only this morning at the hospital?

Kamala Devi, (45) of Havelock Rd, Colombo 6, from her bed at the accident ward of the Kalubowila Hospital said ?I was sleeping on the verandah last night when the electric bulb exploded and electricity went off. I felt a searing pain on my thigh. When I touched it I felt I was bleeding heavily. Then my husband opened the door and we herd gun fire every where.?

Pathima Nislin Ameen (27) of Nelson Rd, Wellawatte was injured when an object came through the ceiling of her bed room and hit her.

Colombo South Hospital Accident Ward Director K.D. Atapatthu said injuries had been inflicted by metal objects and pieces of glass and the injuries were not of serious nature. Wellawatte Police OIC Mangala Dehideniya said he collected a nozzle of a cartridge of a five zero gun from the scene at Mrs. Pthima?s residence.

Nah... can't be
If tigers had this so called anti-aircraft defense system why the heck did they wait this long to fire at our planes...
and to come all the way to Katu in their planes and cause 40% fleet loss :)

One of our birds would have developed a mechanical problem and these f00ls are trying to take credit for that...
if it was indeed 'shot down' these folks would've made so much more noise :)

Hopefully the brave pilot would've bailed out into friendly territory if the aircraft was beyond recovery :)

We need our fliers safe to eradicate the scourge of ltte terrorism...

i doubt it was shot down. my guess is mechanical failure.

I agree the chances of mechanical failure is quite high with Faulty Kfir's and hefty Commission..!
