Keheliya speaks of a diplomat who tarnishes the country's sovereignty

(LeN-2007 April 18, 8.00 pm) Government defense spokesperson minister Keheliya Rambukwella says there is a diplomat who fingers beyond his/her area of work and tarnishes the country's sovereignty, but if he/she continues to do so, he/she will be dispatched from the country.

Speaking to the media at the media centre for national security he said there were instances when the American Ambassador was sent away from the country.

He said the relevant person has been going on working in a way that tarnishes the country's good will and that such work has escalated since the attack on the Katunayake air port attack. He said there were similar diplomats who were working beyond their subject areas but they later disciplined them selves after the relevant government authorities spoke and briefed them, expect for this particular person.

He stresses that no one could attempt or threaten to hamper the country's sovereignty.

When a journalist asked who the particular person was, the minister said he would reveal the details next week but said yes and no when a journalist questioned whether it was a facilitator.

Rambukwella also said that an inter-ministerial committee comprised with ministers of foreign affairs, defense, judicial and human rights has been newly appointed to investigate the recent spate of abductions. He said the committee also includes the attorney general and the commanders of the three armed forces. The committee is supposed to be handing over a report in this regard every year.

Defence secretary threatens 'Daily Mirror' editor showing Karuna

(LeN-2007 April 17, 11.30 pm) Defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse has made a serious death threat to the editor of the Daily Mirror news paper Champika Liyanarachchi, via phone last morning.

He has made the threat due to a headline story which the paper carried stating that heavily armed Karuna Faction members were loitering in Ampara and that the law implementers seemed to be blind. The Defence secretary has said that the Daily Mirror editor was digging her own grave by writing articles criticizing the government and him. He has also said that if the Karuna faction starts hunting her down the government will be helpless in such a situation.

On several previous occasions the editor of the newspaper was criticised by several government officials.

When 'LeN' questioned regarding the threats to the Daily Mirror editor media spokesperson of the Karuna Faction Asad Maulana said that journalists will not be harmed by their party since they are a democratic party, and that their military power will be used only against terrorists.

He added that his party nor the leader has no intention of harming the Daily Mirror editor because there is no reason for them to do so if the paper is publishing accirate information.

Asad Maulana said that Champika Liyanarachchi even spoke to his leader regarding the threat made to her.

Unidentified air craft flies twice over jaffna- Security forces deny

(LeN-2007 April 17, 11.30 pm) Jaffna civilians have complained to the security forces regarding an unidentified air craft which had roamed around over the government controlled territory in Jaffna on the 16th.

Our reporter in the North quoting eye witnesses said that first the air craft has been seen at around 2 in the afternoon and that it was seen again at around 4 in the evening. Those who witnessed the air craft say that they've never seen any air craft of that sort earlier.

Meanwhile the Tamilnet website also reported that civilians in the area were shaken due to unidentified air craft. It added that security forces suspected the air craft to belong to the LTTE and even shut down the lights in the camps. But it added that they were different from the air craft reported to be having by the security forces.

However air force spokesperson group captain Ajantha Silva said the air force has not received any complaints regarding the air craft. When LeN asked whether such a air craft has been reported in the satellite systems he said such details cannot be revealed to the media.

When we inquired from the media centre for national security it said that the air craft might be an Indian air craft but said they have not received any such information.
