Everyone in srilanka fear abduction ( Police personal/lawyers/politicians/armypersonal/Tourist/even foreign diplomats)
Wednesday, 18 April 2007 - 5:31 PM SL Time

Under King Rajapakshas government every human being under government control area fear abduction.
many businessmen have been transfering their assets to other countries and move their families and looking for businesses there.
Politicians choose to stay in other countries.
Cricketers try to stay in other countries ( ranil: If Murali in srilanka he too could have been abducted)
many lawyers applying for visa to foreign country.
even policechiefs feels they too have abducted even though some section of police and army involved in abduction. It is a cottage inductry eveyone doing it a police said.

aminity international requested a visit to srilanka , king bro`s rejected because they fear they too could have abducted. or if they comeout unabducted they will tell to the world.

Amnisty International said `Srilankan Government is Hiding things`

`Something to hide`

`The government is reacting as if it has something to hide, there is no other reason why we cannot visit if the situation is ok as it says,` Regional Campaign Coordinator, Asia Pacific Programme, Amnesty International, Rob Godden said.

The government has rejected visas for two AI officials to visit Sri Lanka ? the latest in the public sparring match between the two that commenced with AI launching its soft ball campaign to coincide with the ongoing Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean.

The government also insisted that it had succeeded in preventing Amnesty from carrying out its advocacy campaign near and inside the World Cup venues.

The Foreign Ministry said that it was after the government`s concerns were made known to the ICC that information was printed on the back of World Cup match tickets banning demonstrations.

However the human rights watchdog reacted by arguing that the focus of the campaign was never the Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean or the Sri Lankan cricket team specifically.

`We never initiated our campaign in the Caribbean. We have only had very small groups in the West Indies who have visited bars and school children in order to inform people of our campaign against Sri Lanka`s human rights violations. The Sri Lankan government needs to get its facts straight before accusing Amnesty,` Godden said.

The ICC which has been dragged into the politically sensitive issue said that it did not want to get involved in the ongoing controversy and politicise the World Cup. Although the government has taken its concerns against the AI campaign to the ICC, the Council said that they cannot stop human rights organisations from conducting their campaigns outside the World Cup venues.

Peaceful demonstrations

ICC Spokesperson James Fitzgerlad last week said that it could not in any way prevent peaceful demonstrations outside venues and that the issue was between the Sri Lankan government and Amnesty.

An ICC Spokesperson from Dubai told The Morning Leader that AI had todate not entered the World Cup venues and they would be prevented if an attempt was made to carry out any campaign within the venues. The Spokesperson said that the ICC would not interfere with AI or the Sri Lankan government as the World Cup was not a wrestling ground for governments and human rights organisations to fight out their battles.

`We will not get involved in the ongoing battle between AI and the Sri Lankan government. AI has not tried to enter the venues to date but due to concerns expressed by the Sri Lankan government, they will be prevented if they try to carry out their campaign inside the venues. However we cannot stop human rights organisations from carrying out their campaigns outside the venues as it is not our concern,` the ICC Spokesperson said.

Not informed

Amnesty meanwhile said that they had not been informed by the council of being banned from entering World Cup venues and even if they were, it would not have any impact on the organisation as AI had not taken its `campaign into World Cup venues and would never do so.`

AI also maintained that while their campaign was conducted to push for international monitors in Sri Lanka, they had no intention of harming or damaging the Sri Lankan cricket team.

`We have nothing against cricket. But it is our responsibility to ensure that human rights violations in Sri Lanka end,` Godden said. Godden questioned the government`s reluctance in allowing international monitors in the country and warned that violations would continue till such time international monitors intervene in the situation.

Letter to ICC

The Sri Lankan High Commission in London last week also expressed the government`s concerns against the AI campaign in an official letter to CEO of the ICC, Malcolm Speed. However Speed is yet to reply the letter.

In the midst of mixed reactions and criticisms, AI last week also challenged the government to provide evidence in supporting its allegation that Amnesty had carried out its campaign inside the World Cup venues.

The organisation said that while the government had made its allegations without any proof, it was only clear that they were trying to do everything possible to halt the organisation`s campaign.

Meanwhile, the government and its hard-line partners appear to be increasingly isolated with even the main opposition party ? the UNP ? last week endorsing that international intervention, the crux of the AI argument, was now inevitable in the country.

`If Muralitharan was in Colombo he too would be abducted. Someone needs to take responsibility for this,` UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said while addressing a meeting of the families of those missing last week.

No issues

The LTTE which has also been accused by Amnesty of rights violations last week said that it had no issues with allowing international human rights monitors into areas under their control.

`We are not against Amnesty International`s campaign. We are all cricket lovers but initiating such a campaign during the World Cup will only bring more pressure on the Sri Lankan government to cease violating human rights,` LTTE Spokesperson Selvy Navaruban told The Morning Leader.

While the LTTE itself has been accused of violating human rights, the Tigers said that they fully supported international monitors in the country and would continue to support any campaign which would allow any international monitoring mission in the country.

Meanwhile the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) in a hard hitting statement has criticised the government`s reaction to AI`s international campaign stating that the Sri Lankan government was more interested in cricket than addressing human rights violations.

`Ridiculous`

`At first sight it may appear ridiculous for anyone to oppose a call to play by the rules. This is, after all, what everyone is expected to be doing at any given time. It should, in particular, gladden the hearts of a government when an international chorus supports the ambition that any reasonable government should have, which is to play by the rules and to get its opponents to play by the same rules.

`However, the Sri Lankan government is not pleased by this call. The concerns it raises are purely of a psychological nature as to how this call may affect the national cricket team in their game. In the government`s ardent enthusiasm for cricket they have started a counter-campaign against all Sri Lankans who play by the rules. An outsider cannot be blamed if he or she forms the opinion that the government is opposed to the idea of playing by the rules. The outsider may even further believe that this is very strange,` the AHRC said.

Collapse of the rule of law

While AHRC has characterised the situation of Sri Lanka as one of an exceptional collapse of the rule of law it said that unless the international community positively and strongly supports the people of Sri Lanka, who are the only ones who seem to want to see a return to normalcy, and to re-establish the normal framework for playing by the rules, which is the framework of democracy and rule of law, things are likely to get worse.

`It is not enough for the international community to call on all Sri Lankans to play by the rules, it must positively assist the country and its people to make that possible,` AHRC said.

The organisation further said that the Sri Lankan cricket team has endeared itself to the whole world by its charming sportsmanship.

`They know to play by the rules and they have also proved that they can still win when playing by the rules. Their experience has been positive and that is good reason to develop a healthy mentality of being an example of sportsmanship. They are psychologically upbeat because in the field of cricket they know the rules and play by them,` the human rights organisation said.

Plea

It further added that however, unfortunately in the field of politics in recent decades the Sri Lankan mind has become deranged. It is mortally scared of playing by the rules and does not even hide its opposition, even for the sake of not being embarrassed internationally.

`The plea is for the international world to understand that Sri Lanka cannot afford to play by the rules. It is this deeply entrenched position that the government is expressing to the international community by its unrestrained attacks on the call to play by the rules.

`The international community instead of being irritated by such a message from the government should see it as an eye-opener to the depth of the problems Sri Lanka is facing, AHRC said.

Amnesty`s campaign and the government`s knee-jerk reaction to it reached the streets of Colombo last week with protestors wanting Amnesty to mind it own business and leave the cricketers alone. According AI that is what it is doing, and it is the government that has dragged the cricketers into it so as to save face.

I am not a Karuna fan. For me a terrorist is a terrorist it doesn't mean good terrorist or bad terrorist.

I am not bothered as I am not a Mahinda fan either. I am a free thinker I want people to live without fear. For that matter Pirapa or Mahinda is not for me buddy.

JRJ , my point is that dont fund state terrorist.
if i had to fly i would fly on other airlines. because i dont want any profit made out of me to be used to kill a fellow tamil.
i advice you the same.( until problem resolved) since CFA i had flown in srilankan airline three times and now i see the profit made of my flight is funded to kill and distroy tamils lives.

JR do you know when CFA signed LTTE had stoped collecting funds and people were interested in investment in the country and so on.

then people realised This state terror dont stop. and realised we were taken for a ride by srilankan government on CFA. therefore it was duty of tamils to keep LTTE strengthen therefore many people volenterly donated millions.
and some even went further and try to aquire stuffs for the LTTE.

LTTE is a freedom Fighting organisation that is fighting agaist state terrorism.

LTTE had fought through non violance means after failing get that resolved they choose military path.

few months ago when Vaharai people were staved and shelled TNA MP 's protested in parliment. and what happend?
house ignored them and parliment continued.
what did that tells you?
you have no interest in peacefull protest.
therefore It was Right LTTE chooses to attack Gothabaya???

some analyst say people of all ethnic group wants peace.
but recent CPA survey shows 60% sinhalese wants war.
therefore they need to get a taste of war soon.
and in my view they will get it.
