| | Why I believe the mighty Aussies can be beaten by Lanka Monday, 16 April 2007 - 7:56 AM SL Time | | | It takes a gallant effort to beat a world class team and no doubt tomorrow`s preliminary match or shall I say to the least pre-cup final match with the Aussies most probably be one of the great things that has happened to Lanka in the tournament. I feel not having Malinga in the line up will also help Lankan lads to show their power. Mahela`s manupulation of bowlers is the key during the power play stints.
Now lets have a brief comparison of the top players of both teams.
Matty Hayden V Sanath Jayasuriya (almost the same but Sana may have the edge over the experience factor so he probably be little above than his opponent)
Ricky Ponting V Mahela Jayawardena (Pontings is defintely better than Mahela so he has the edge - fair enough; but remember all world class players can be bowled out for a `duck` or should I say a Golden Duck, the key is Ponting is vulnerable in the beginning)
Gilchrist V Sangakkara (They both are similar characters enough talent to open their teams. But Gilli can be unreliable sometimes and he can get out quickly if he`s pressurised by some early tight bowling, whereas Sanga is usually a mentally tough batsman can stick around work for runs if the bowling is tight, perhaps Sanga scores is slightly above on my scale)
McGrath V Vaas (they both are similar in experience and performance, both are truly world class performers on any wicket, perhaps McGrath is tad better and playing his swan song may have impetus for more performance, but that depends if he`s rattled by Sana he could be costly)
Hogg V Murali (Definitely the champion spinner Murali is miles ahead and perhaps holds the key for the outcome on a wearing pitch provided we let the Aussies chase the runs)
On paper perhaps Aussies are too good for us. But on the balance performance and Ponting being overly confident might just make that extra misconception which could force us to be buckled down and out play the mighty Aussies.
I think either tomorrow or the final, it will be a tight finish. Even if we were to lose tomorrow by the skin of the teeth that is, we`ll win the final by the same skin of the teeth. My only doubt for tomorrow`s match prediction is we might win if we only play to our potential once we put a score around 265+ on the board. If not we might see we`re just missing Malinga the Ree Ree so tomorrow is good platform for the final.
Good luck lads we`re proud of you! |

JRJ,
Meparath denawa duwanna. If they bat first can get them all out for 150. If we bat first 350 for sure machan.
I must say I'm enjoying this big talk. How often we get to do that eh? Edited By - radaw - 16 Apr 2007 01:05:18 GMT |

machang, all this media hype and the English commentators banking the aussies to be a cakewalk won't be that common place I believe.
What we need is bat first and play sensibly for the first 10 overs without losing a wicket so we're comfortable at the wicket, it has to be similar pattern to where we played V WI for the first 10 overs were quiet. sana, I hope realises that and go for his swashbucklers little late after getting used to the pitch.
The key is we should set them a target and let Murali and Sana bowl second. Toss is the key factor!

Thanks JRJ for the in-depth analogy.
If Sana bats good and we bowl well, we have a better chance to win.
I will not be worried even if we loose tomorrow. It will help to regroup
in the Finals and Beat Aussies. SL has good team spirit that will help
us to win. It will be very interestin match tomorrow.
Hope to see you in LNP tomorrow. |

JR,
Overall Sri Lanka has the edge but we need a captain like Arjuna in situations like this.
In the NZ match, Mahela's use of bowlers left much to be desired. He should not use slow bowlers in the final overs. He must come good with his batting too. |

JRJ,
Ponting is the man to watch, he has done well on every pitch and on every form of game against all types bowlers. Murali has only got him once in ODI so that speaks a lot about him!!
Aussie strength is in their attitude to wards the game i have not seen their shoulders down even when their openers in trouble. The number 8 batsman will come to their rescue.
SL got a great team and could beat NZ, SA and any other team at any given day but the Aussies are all to gather in a different league.but having said that this is going to be a great match and have a feeling it would be a dress rehearsal for the finals. |

Maitreya,
Thanks for that timely reminder of 1996. I think the team is pretty much the same with the depth of talent and the issue is can that be performed when it matters and as Bonggo says captaincy does matter and whether Mahela is an artuclate captain as Arjuna remains to be seen.
Bongs,
Machang agree, Mahels needs to think more closely this time.
Karu,
In some games luck plays a pivotal role and I believe getting Ponting out soon is somethig related to luck or sheer brilliant bowling. Murali may not be the best bowler for certain batsmen. We all know that the Aussies are good at playing spinners especially due to 'Warne' factor.
Its going to be a hard tussle but lets believe in fairplay upon 100% committment. Anything is possible and I am going to place a small bet on Lanka to win in the midway. If we bat first we need 265+ or if we bowl first we must reduce them to less than 270. anything other than that would be mighty hard.
Having said that I believe McGrath is not as efficient as he used to be and Lee is not there and Tait is not a 100% reliable campaigner always. Bracken is good and he's really good. But its their batting that I'm concerned about.

Thanks for the posting of 1996 game, wow what a game, hope we'll do the same this time. Murali looked so young and Sana had hair :))I got goosebums watching that. Arjuna was a great captain with confidence. It's amazing that all the indians were cheering for SL too. If we come to finals I am off to the carribean :)))
Too bad my boy malinga is not playing :(((
see you at the game!
