Tigers vow retaliation in Sri Lanka`s east
Friday, 13 April 2007 - 8:21 PM SL Time

The Tamil Tigers vowed Friday to hit back against an advance by government troops in the east of Sri Lanka, accusing the military of `genocidal activities` there.

The rebels denied military claims they were retreating in the face of an onslaught in the Eastern Province, where they were ejected from a coastal stronghold in January, and said they would retaliate `very soon.`

`As far as the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) is concerned we have adjusted our tactics according to the needs and we have not withdrawn from the east,` LTTE`s political wing leader S. P. Thamilselvan said.

`I believe only our actions in the coming period will answer the propaganda (of the government) whether the Sri Lankan military has won a stable victory,` he said in an e-mail interview with AFP.

With the escalation of fighting in April last year and the collapse of a 2002 Norwegian-brokered ceasefire agreement, the government has blocked journalists travelling to rebel-held areas in the island`s north, where the LTTE has its military and political headquarters.

The LTTE`s Thamilselvan, who is also the group`s top peace negotiator, said the military was `behaving like an occupational force that has let loose its genocidal activities against the Tamil people` in the east.

He said the Tigers had turned the tables on government forces in the past and inflicted heavy losses, adding, `I believe similar instances will be repeated in the east very soon.`

Defence ministry spokesman Prasad Samarasinghe said here Thursday that the Tigers were on the run in the coastal province, where they have been restricted to a jungle area just outside the lagoon town of Batticaloa.

`Only about 140 square kilometres (56 square miles) of jungle land in the Thoppigala area (near Batticaloa) still remain under LTTE control and we believe around 300 to 350 rebels are in the jungles,` Samarasinghe told reporters.

The Sri Lankan military says its operations against the Tigers in the east are a `defensive humanitarian operation.`

President Mahinda Rajapakse visited the former rebel bastion of Vakarai in January and shortly after he left the area gunmen shot dead the Hindu priest who had welcomed him to the tense region.

The government accused the Tigers of the slaying, which underscored the threat faced by hundreds of troops and police deployed in the area despite the military`s dismantling of civil administrative structures set up by the rebels since 1990.

Military officials privately admit that they have been stretched thinly in the eastern region since January, with the capture of new territory.

Military analysts have noted that neither the Tigers nor the military have demonstrated a capability to fight on two fronts -- on the northern and the eastern flanks -- at the same time due to manpower limitations.

However, the military has claimed success after success in the eastern region while holding on to the front lines in the troubled north as well.

`The Sri Lankan military is spin-doctoring their own creation of this human misery as military victories,` Thamilselvan said from the rebel-held north.

More than 4,000 people died between December 2005 and the first week of March 2007 across the country, including 675 civilians and 1,040 security personnel, according to defence ministry figures.

In the island`s north, the Tigers and government forces traded artillery and mortar bomb attacks across their front lines for three straight days until Thursday, police said.

Each side claimed it killed a large number of enemy combatants, although no independent confirmation of the casualty figures was available.

Seven Sinhalese civilians were also gunned down Thursday and the military and the Tigers blamed each other for the killing.

Tamilselvan,,

You are good at only KILLINGS or cutting hair. WHATELSE you know to do??

We heard when you do kill, you dont discriminate victims.. You kill your own kind Tamils, (Northern, estern) Sinhalese & Muslims. You go further in equalising your killing by *NOT* avoiding even Children & women. You carry the same killing sprey on every body equally.

But when you cut hairs, we heard you adhere to some norms. Men - different hair cuts, Women-different hair cuts, Children & kids- Much different hair cuts.

So its advisiable for you to stop Cutting hair and switched to *KIILING* bcoz you discriminate in hair cutting.

Hi barber, it?s quite some time we didn?t hear anything about your famous tactical withdrawl. Call it the way you want, as long as your remaining guys in the East move back to the Vanni Zoo, that?s fine with me and more importantly with the large majority of the civil population in the East. They deserve a peaceful New Year liberated from their SOLE REPRESENTATIVES who make their lives a misery.
