People`s Bank takes another innovative step in its drive towards strengthening its business-responsive IT culture, built on an `anytime anywhere anyhow service`, by introducing Sri Lanka`s first ever location independent online branch. The bank now offers a complete range of banking services not restricted to branch locations, or to areas with traditional data communication infrastructures.
With this unique online mobile branch, which is also known as a mobile counters service, customers can make their financial transactions electronically from any place. It has been equipped to perform many of the banking transactions usually carried out within bank premises, without the wait and the restriction of banking hours.
The services on offer include Account opening; Cash deposits and withdrawals; All possible transactions for savings, current accounts, loans and FDs; Balance enquiries of bank accounts; Inter branch transactions (transfer funds); Receive reference informtion (foreign exchange rates, bank properties, etc.); Keep track of payment documents, bank statements and foreign exchange rates; Passbook updation, Statement printing; and All pawning transactions (except redemptions).
Furthermore, the online mobile branch comes equipped with a state-of the-art PA system; multimedia presentation facilities; a Manager`s room, where customers may interact with the staff or discuss their queries; etc. All this adds up to an extremely convenient service to customers, who can now electronically access their accounts without stepping into a branch. The online mobile branch was in service recently in Angunukolapalassa with many customers fulfilling their various financial needs.
Speaking on this innovation, Dr. D. N. D. Ramanayake, Head of Information Technology, People`s Bank said, `We are proud to offer all banking services available in major cities to communities in areas even without a telephone line. This online branch-on-wheels will be the first of many digital dividends we plan to provide for rural Sri Lanka.`
Deepal Abeysekera, Head of Marketing and Public Affairs, People`s Bank maintained that `People`s Bank, being the bank for the aspiring people of Sri Lanka, wants to truly take banking to our customers` doorstep. We are proud to announce the first ever online mobile branch in Sri Lanka.` Revolutionizing the IT platform of the banking industry by reaching out to its customers in the fullest possible manner, People`s Bank has thus made a unique contribution in the standards of customer convenience.

In the developed countries where we have access to the bank's website all transactions could be carried out even in our lab-top. Operating credit cards, paying bills, using visa cards etc., Banks are doing well and make good profits.
In our poor country how can afford this luxury and how many will make use of this facility?. The gap between the rich and the poor will be further widened. |

| Kandappa is correct, S/L is far behind on IT, few people use the internet, I have often observed it take a very long time to get a reply for a EMail from S/lankans, even from large private sector companies who does business. I have few friends who take days to reply an email. They are far behind unlike Europians/Americans or even Indians...... S/L will take a long time to get used to Internet Banking etc., |

Regarding e-mails .... I do not know about you ..... but I have worked in several SL private organizations and if I fail to neglect an important email (like a customer complain) even for few hours, the result would not be that sweet.
S/L will take a long time to get used to Internet Banking etc ...
Yeah... these are sill new for many Sri Lankans ... but IT penetration to lower (rural) levels are taking place at a faster pace than before. |

Before trying fancy things, people's bank should try and cut down on the paper work, for example, why does a customer have to fill in a withdrawal form. Instead a customer should be able to go the cashier straightaway and state the amount he/she wants to withdraw. Then the cashier would key in the data and a withdrawal slip will be generated giving all the necessary particulars. This can be signed by the customer, take the money and go.
Secondly, all government servants are still paid their salaries in cash or cheques at the end of the month. This practice runs the risk of robbery and stealing and frauds. Instead, each government servents should be asked to open an account and the employing organisation would send a payroll the bank including the names of all employees with accounts with that bank and credit the salary to their respective accounts.
These have been practised in other countries for the past 20-25 years. It is Slanka that is lagging behind. For much for IT and the rest. |
