Inquiries revealed that the driver of the liquor container who was on a long journey from Nuwara Eliya fell asleep while driving and lost control of the vehicle.
The Transport Ministry and the CTB has made arrangements to pay compensation to the victims of the accident. Meanwhile Southern Province Chief Minister, Shan Wijelal has decided to pay Rs. 10,000 each as funeral expenses to the next-of-kin of those who died in the accident.

| Induruwa, I remember, if I am correct hasnt been a good place for the motorists/commuters to pass by....I had been away from S/L for sometime ,But when mentioned about Induruwa, it sounds a bell.....can someone tell me whether this is the place where there was a major Rail Accident once upon a time OR was this the place where Chanaka Ameratunga ( Leader of the Liberal Party & OXONIAN) died of a Car accident on Colombo/Galle Rd. in the early hours of one morning; I also remember a car accident at a rail crossing at Induruwa where both Father/Mother/two small children died, but the infant & their maid (servant in s/L) escaped I knew this family. |

VIMUKTHI,
I am not sure where in Induruwa this accident has exactly happened. However, Induruwa is basically the stretch that runs from Aluthgama Bridge (i.e. that dangerous bridge where Galle Rd crosses the Railway line meters before the narrow bridge) to Turtle Breeding Farm at Kosgoda (which later washed out by the Tsunami). I have neither been to this part of Sri Lanka for years and therefore I may be wrong.
The rail disaster you mentioned (that took place soon after Premadasa resumed power) has happened at Ahungalle (i.e after Kosgoda if you are heading to Galle from Col).

Vimukth,
Dr.Chanaka Amaratunga met with his death at Payagala South also on the Galle Road a little beyond Kalutara.
The train/car accident you refer to happened at Pinwatta in Wadduwa and the family was from Kurunegala. If Iam correct the husband was a Tamil and the wife a Sinhalese.
It was a train/bus accident that occured at Ahungalla where a train plowed into a bus full of school children at an unguarded rail-crossing, and soon after RP came up with the concept of bamboo barriers at all unguarded crossings in the country.
The bridge which Mucha refers to is actually at Bentota across the Bentara River. Edited By - kiwikanga - 12 Apr 2007 15:20:39 GMT |

I have more than ten years of experience traveling along Galle road.
Here is what happens, from Colombo to Moratuwa there is a huge traffic block. As a result drivers traveling toward Galle spend nearly half of their time on a 1/8 of the journey. On release at Moratuwa, like a sling shot, we travel at the highest possible speed, sometimes getting booked at Induruwa, Payagala, Ambalangoda and then sometimes near Hikkaduwa.
In the return journey, we start as early as possible to avoid peak-hour traffic from Moratuwa to Colombo. To do that we have to speed up again at those straight stretches of road. Even if we have first hand experience as Galle road is one of the most dangerous roads, we still need to speed-up to 'survive'. |

Vishnu,
So it's a typical case of Survival of the Fittest and the law of the jungle on SL roads!! |
