Sri Lanka`s former cricket coach John Dyson is confident that Sri Lanka will go on to win the Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean. Dyson believes that Sri Lanka has got the balance and the experience that no other team in the competition has and is hopeful they`ll emerge champions of the 16-nation tournament that`s reaching its last phase.
The former Australian opener took over the coaching duties of Sri Lanka immediately after the 2003 World Cup and stayed in the job for two years before Tom Moody succeeded him in 2005.
`I am absolutely thrilled to see the team performing at this level,` Dyson told `The Island` from Sydney. `Some people are surprised to see the team performing at this level, but not me. What I liked in Sri Lankans was their desire to work hard and the desire to improve and when you are committed to what you do sky is the limit,` Dyson said.
`In bowling, Sri Lanka used to depend a lot on Murali and Vaasy for years and guys like Dilly (Dilhara Fernando) and Mali (Lasith Malinga) have raised their games and they couldn`t have done that at a better time. I am extremely pleased for those two blokes and I hope they`ll finish things off in style.`
Malinga made his debut in Australia in 2004 when Dyson was the coach and has made rapid progress over the years. `It`s about time that those two guys won Sri Lanka a few games. Mali was brand new when he played his first game in Darwin and impressed many people. We knew he was special and we knew he`ll win us games. Dilly has been there for sometime and his problem was that he suddenly lost his rhythm and got into the habit of bowling no balls. Of the bowlers we had, he was different as he had the ability to bowl faster and when he avoids overstepping he is a match winning bowler. I was really impressed with the way he bowled against England and hopefully he`ll continue in that form,` Dyson added.
`Apart from Upul Tharanga and Malinga Bandara the World Cup squad has the same set of players whom we played regularly. The conditions are suiting the team and if they keep on playing this way they do they can win the tournament,` Dyson, who is now attached to Australia`s Department of Education, said.
Sri Lanka topped Group `B` after comfortable wins against India, Bangladesh and Bermuda and are holding the second spot in the points table behind Australia. Mahela Jayawardene`s side beat West Indies and England in the Super Eight stage and went down to South Africa by the narrowest of margins.
`This team has covered all vital areas. The Australians and the Sri Lankans are on song and we could see another Australia-Sri Lanka final. The way the two teams have played so far, they deserve to be in the final.`
`I feel Sri Lanka`s bowling is very strong and that gives them the edge compared to most teams. The effort against South Africa was absolutely sensational. It was not a good enough target to defend but the boys just kept on fighting till the last moment. Now that`s the kind of effort and attitude that`ll win a World Cup for you.
`I enjoyed the time I was in charge of the team. I remember telling the officials that if they patiently handle some of those guys they`ll perform on a consistent basis and I am happy to see the results.`
`There was no question of talent. Talent was always there. I just felt that these guys needed more time to mature at international level,` Dyson added.

Immediately after winning the world cup, the SL officials thought they knew better than the then coach Whatmore. They appointed 6 coaches one for balling, one for batting, one for fielding, etc, etc. When the local coaches screwed up the game, they got this block. He did not do a good job. Slanka lost almost all games it played during his time. And that is why he is now attached to the ministry of Education!
If David stayed on, Slanka would have won several more world cups. Slanka was ungrateful to him.
Do it boys, once again, as cricket is the only thing we can be proud of. What else is there for us to be happy about?
Never mind the rising prices back home, just concentrate on the games ahead. |

Glad to read your comments Mr.Dyson, but as a Opener see we have failed to propergate reliable openers to SL Side.
Our problems are in Batting from opening to number 4 or 5.
You think our boys going to score over 350 ? if, it is match wining. Edited By - Damed - 11 Apr 2007 04:39:58 GMT |
