Pope Benedict has called on Sri Lanka`s warring parties to come back to the negotiations to end violence.
In his traditional Easter message, the Pope said Sri Lanka`s need of the moment is peace.
`In Sri Lanka, only a negotiated solution can put an end to the conflict that causes so much bloodshed,` Pope Benedict said.
He called on Christians all around the world to work for peace in a world afflicted by a thousand faces of violence.
`Thousand faces` of violence
`I am thinking of the scourge of hunger, of incurable diseases, of terrorism and kidnapping of people, of the thousand faces of violence which some people attempt to justify in the name of religion, of contempt for life, of the violation of human rights and the exploitation of persons.`
In a message from the balcony of St Peter`s Basilica in Rome, the Pope called to mind conflicts in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
In Africa, he listed Darfur, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia and Zimbabwe as places of suffering.
Africa`s conflicts
`In Darfur and the neighbouring countries there is a catastrophic, and, sad to say, underestimated, humanitarian situation`.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, Pope Benedict said, the violence has raised fear for the future and the reconstruction efforts of the Republic.
`In Somalia, the renewed fighting has driven away the prospect of peace, and worsened the regional crisis, especially with regards to the displacement of populations, and the traffic of arms`.
He said Zimbabwe is also on the brink of a `grievous crisis`.
The Pope criticised those who used religion to justify violence, human rights abuses and exploitation.
He said that Iraq was being torn apart by continual slaughter as the civilian population fled.

Pope must have been informed about the butchering of Fr. Brown and Gnanaseelan.
Punguduthivu body may belong to Fr.Brown, say Jaffna clergy
The Tamil speaking Christian community in Sri Lanka?s northern city of Jaffna is shocked by the brutal murder of a Protestant Christian Tamil pastor in broad daylight on January 13th. 38 year old pastor of the evangelical Tamil mission church Jaffna , Rev. Nallathamby Gnanaseelan, was shot dead as he was travelling on his motor cycle along chapel street in the heart of Jaffna town. The incident happened near the Vembaddy road junction at about 10. 30 am on Saturday . Uniformed soldiers on duty near the Vembaddy - Hospital road were responsible for the brutal killing say eyewitnesses. Edited By - chinthanaya - 8 Apr 2007 16:07:08 GMT |

This pope doesn't have the right(s) to talk too much after his recent comments on Islam,
To be frank, this pop ... well I should stop before I go any further and make a big religious related hatred fuzz here on LNP this good day.

Even in his talk he mentioned about the killings in the name of religion.
Even IRaq wars are partly religious, the desire to convert the whole world to catholc -ism. Edited By - AnuD - 8 Apr 2007 16:19:50 GMT |

This time Pope Benedict the XVI has avoided commenting on sensitve issues, his contraversial remarks on Islam has sent a wave of anger through out the islamic world.
I believe he should send a vatican delegation to Kilinochie to talk with Velupille Pirbaharn.
It will be better if Dalai lama and Pope both could visit Sri Lanka. Edited By - Emperor74 - 8 Apr 2007 16:23:32 GMT |

Chinthanaya,
Pope must have been informed about the butchering of Fr. Brown and Gnanaseelan.
:) yes yes thats why he decided to do 'his traditional Easter message'.
BTW this mutilated torso also came right on time isn't it? Although 'packed in a military sand bag tied with a grindstone by barbed wire'!
Despite 'Extra effort taken by the killers to ensure that the murdered body remained at the bottom of the ocean ' it came right on time so Pope can do his Easter message! |

My personal view on this pope is, he is an intermediate pope and he should know the importance of his mission, which we are still to witness through his action. Edited By - Saint - 8 Apr 2007 16:26:50 GMT |

HOw come LTTEers escape via Colombo and then again begin to send money to LTTE.
Need some one looking into that.
The Wanni hierarchy recalled people to the Wanni easily thanks to the ceasefire.Constant contact with overseas branches were maintained through the internet and satellite phones. Operatives were appointed and fired rapidly. The ceasefire also paved the way for many youths with LTTE links to come to Colombo and then travel abroad. Most of them had left the LTTE but retained links and support. Many of them found their way to Paris. |
