Balls at World Cup expose biased umpires
Friday, 6 April 2007 - 8:41 PM SL Time

The hotly disputed Amnesty International-led campaign, styled `play by the rules`, written on dummy cricket balls targeting the Sri Lankan cricket team, participating in the World Cup in the Caribbean, reveals the growing relationship between AI bigwigs and the LTTE.

Authoritative sources said that this was a part of a wider conspiracy against the Sri Lankan government. The sources accused the London-headquartered human rights watchdog of strengthening LTTE efforts to internationally embarrass Sri Lanka.

The sources said that the AI action was a continuation of an effort to isolate Sri Lanka and strengthen the LTTE`s case against the State.

The AI move coincides with the proposed Human Rights Council action against Sri Lanka. Although the HRC deferred its resolution on Sri Lanka`s human rights situation at the conclusion of its recent sessions in Geneva, the government is under heavy pressure to suspend the `offensive` military action against the LTTE.

The inclusion of a former Amnesty International heavyweight in an LTTE delegation in October 2005 revealed the unholy alliance. Francis Boyle, professor of international law at the University of Illinois and a leading practitioner and advocate of international law had represented the LTTE at a meeting with the EU in Geneva. Boyle had served on the Board of Directors of AI (1988-1992). The Geneva meeting took place against the backdrop of an EU decision not to invite LTTE delegations. But this did not bar V. Rudrakumaran, a New York based attorney-at-law and a member of the LTTE negotiating team at the Norwegian-managed peace talks during Ranil Wickremesinghe`s tenure as the Premier.

My personal opinion is one should not... even my boss Mr. God shouldn't mix other things with Sri Lankan cricket.

It's not nice and there will be...

Oh, now there are white LTTE too....!

Read this letter in Morning Leader ...

Only the politicians are smiling

We Sri Lankans? natural, innocent, smiling faces have earned universal acclaim. Sri Lankans one and all were content, non aggressive, breathed and slept freely with even one meal a day not so long ago.

When an occasional murder or theft took place or an unidentified dead body was recovered somewhere all flocked to see and expressed shock and grief.

Since independence and the dawn of the 'patriots? era,' gradually the seeds of hatred were sown by those so called ?patriots,? splitting society up to today?s gory sights of death everywhere.

Parents have become restless and fear even to send their children to school unaccompanied. Can you walk freely on the roads today?

The splitting of society on racial and religious basis, and exploiting it to the maximum is the master tool all treacherous politicians effectively used for self gain.

Those who deserted the people by accepting bribes when a settlement to the racial conflict is in sight are totally responsible for today?s skyrocketing cost of living and unruly situation in the country.

Men and women who labour the whole day are sometimes unable to feed or dress their children properly. Those thousands who leave universities annually line up streets holding placards and shouting slogans demanding jobs. Women leave children and families to work abroad as slaves.

There are lakhs of others, all citizens of Sri Lanka displaced and starving in camps with tears under inhuman conditions.

Politicians say the war is to free the country, and carry on regardless while taking shelter in fortresses and moving about in bullet proof vehicles with smiles on their faces at public expense.

What happened to the other citizens? who pay for the upkeep of these vultures in patriots? clothing?

Dravid likely to remain captain

Rahul Dravid: set to stay on as captain © Getty Images

Rahul Dravid is likely to stay on as India captain, according to sources in the Board for Control of Cricket in India. This sets at rest speculation that Dravid would give up the captaincy following the decision of Greg Chappell to not extend his contract as India coach.

In any case, the board had no alternative; handing the captaincy to Sachin Tendulkar would be seen in many quarters as a step back, though he appears to have the support of a large number of current India players.

In his interaction with the BCCI top brass today, Dravid is believed to have made three suggestions to improve the setup: a streamlined selection process, better team management with the appointment of a full-time team manager and a full-time media manager.

He said that the team left for the World Cup with high hopes but failed to do well, and accepted responsibility on the team's behalf for the poor performance which led to the early exit.

AMNESTY SQUEEZING THE RIGHT BALL . FINALLY AI ACTION IS HURTING THE SINGHALESE? BRAVO. If their action can reduce the HR violations, abductions, kidnappings, murder, and State Terror at the risk of them becoming unpopular among the Singhalese and GOSL so be it. I hope AI workers are not murdered by GOSL or Para military forces and death squads like the French NGO workers in Muthur. GOSL/Singhalese should not kill the messenger, but take the message seriously. As AI says - Play by the Rules. GOSL has no choice. Attacking AI like they did to UN Alan Rock will become counter productive. Don't cry foul at the umpire, but obey the rules and International law. Why is that so difficult for the GOSL and the Singhalese? No more riots, burning, looting, beatings, killings, rapings, torture, bombings, shootings, shellings, mining, starving, depriving food, fuel, and medicine, and simply respecting the international and Human Rights law. Is that too much to ask from a democratically elected government ? (Installed by a liberation movement via a forced boycott). For the time being let us not discuss the secret deals and where the 7 million dollars in foreign exchange came from. In case it came from any US citizens or residents accounts or control then the US government might also be interested in the transaction, and there is a IRS representative office in Sri Lanka for the past few years headed by a Sri Lankan born. The more the GOSL and Singhalese cry foul and No Ball, wide ball, Throwing the ball, or chucker, AI is acheiving their well planned goal, which is increased publicity, as well as touching the 'Raw' nerve. That is exactly what they wanted to do, and they have even got the undivided attention of the Editor of the Island, leave alone the entire Jumbo cabinet, The President, and the Minister of Human Rights who took a recent fall, in Batticaloa while running away from the LTTE shells. (Sarama Kaddagana dheeva?). I hope he ties his sarong better the next time when he parades western diplomats to Tamil homeland, on a show and tell mission leaving some room for him to run in a hasty retreat. Otherwise, he should learn to run like the port workers, raising his sarong above his knees while running. It is was good that the President was not with him, running that race for safety in Batticaloa Webber Stadium. It is also good for the ministers to wear their 'running shoes', when they go on such speciality show off trips, especially the 'high jumpers'. Well, although all roads lead to Temple Trees, the same road also can go back to Sri Kotha, like what one Deputy Minister of Railways recently did, and now he has complained to AI about the death threats. What was that ball? A doosra from the defense Dept or some death squads? Will he also be assassinated like the 3 Tamil MP's, or will his life be spared because he is a Singhalese? If the death squads can get the Tamil MP's they can also get the Singhalese MP's if they so decide. Only thing is the 'Troika' has to give the nod, and I can bet my last dollar they won't give the nod. Anyway, AI should take note of the death threats, and so should some EU MP's who are busy praising the Rajapakse government and loudly singing Hossanahs in Brussels. Thank God that the UN Secretary General had nothing to do with Sri Lanka or be connected in anyway. As for the Sri Lankan cricketers they have their game faces on, and we all do cheer the Tamils, Singhalese, Muslims, Malays and Burghers on the cricket team. So they won't be affected by this ball campaign of the AI. Besides they are well protected with helmet, pads, and guards to protect themselves and their body parts from any kind of 'ball', at the cricket pitch. It is the women and children of Chencholai and Tamil homeland who have no protections from the balls the Rajapakse brothers throw with the help of the French MIGS, Israeli Kfirs and Dvoras, Iranian guns, American boats and Helicopters, British Tanks, Pakistani Multi barrel rockets, Chinese grenades, guns and land mines, Indian radars (If it is working), and South African AFC's and small arms. What is their score now? 3,333 Tamils dead, 9,999 injured, 500,000 homeless refugees in 16 months? If the IC wants to stop the war first they have to stop the shipment of weapons of war and death, which also includes all the money ($1,400 Million) which goes to buy the arms, ammunitions and military training. I won't even talk about the inflation, depreciation, stock market numbers, domestic and international debt, tourist, insurance premiums, cost of living and starvation in the the North and East. I must give credit where credit is due to the 'troika' promoting democracy in the east where Karuna is the best democrat, and Anandasangaree and Devananda in the North. in the South they simply buy the MP's with post of Ministers, Deputy Ministers, and non cabinet ministers. Of course the official score keeper the former UNP'er Cabraal has different numbers and scores, I guess Monte Carlo style. Since AI has already won the Nobel Peace Prize once, if this 'Ball Campaign' is successful they will win the prize again. The only problem is Americans, Japanese, Koreans, Chinese, and the Europeans have no idea what the cricket ball looks like, nor are they watching this world cup. They do not play cricket. So the Singhalese and the editors need not worry too much about this ball campaign, and the Pakistanis, and Indians are also tuned out after their losses in the world cup, and getting eliminated. You'll should be worried about the IC treating Sri Lanka as a pariah nation, as said in parliament bty the leader of the opposition, and bring your grades up as #25 in the failed nation list, or #14 in discriminating the minorities. So just do not panic, but relax and enjoy the world cup and Muralitharan's bowling, as even the 60 million South Indian Tamils are cheering for him. I am sure many in Vanni too are cheering for Sri Lankan team since they have no racial bias or prejudice in sports
