Conspirators removed to prevent crisis: SLFP General Secretary Tuesday, 20 March 2007 - 5:50 AM SL Time AMBALANGODA:SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena said if those who recently conspired within the party were not removed, there would have been a political crisis affecting the masses. Sirisena, who is also the Agriculture and Mahaweli Development Minister, delivering the keynote address at the SLFP`s annual convention in Ambalangoda during the weekend, said the recent political conspiracy against President Mahinda Rajapaksa was similar to the conspiracy against the late Prime Minister S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike. `The Late Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike during his tenure of office had to face numerous challenges, troubles and tribulations created by some members of SLFP who helped him to come to power. This power hungry vicious circle of SLFP members were not satisfied with the mental agony caused to the late Prime Minister. They even resorted to assassinate him finally,` the General Secretary said.

Reformists defeated: UNP for Select Committee Tuesday, 20 March 2007 - 5:46 AM SL Time An attempt by the UNP reformists to block a resolution supporting the proposed Select Committee to probe corruption at state institutions, was defeated at the party`s parliamentary group meeting yesterday. The meeting was presided over by party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe while 15 reformists made their first appearance at the meeting since accepting ministerial portfolios. UNP frontliner John Amaratunga told the Daily Mirror the party wanted the Select Committee appointed soon to probe various frauds and malpractices in state institutions as revealed by the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE). Mr. Amaratunga charged the intention of the reformists was to nullify the resolution supporting the Committee because two of their members now serving as Cabinet Ministers had also been held responsible by the COPE for certain corrupt deals.

Allegations of Tender manipulations to afford - Norway oil search contract rejected Thursday, 22 March 2007 - 3:27 AM SL Time The Petroleum Ministry yesterday denied accusations that the government`s tender procedures are being manipulated to involve the Norwegians in the ambitious oil exploration project. `There is absolutely no truth in this,` Secretary to the Ministry of Petroleum and Petroleum Resources Development A. P. A. Gunasekera said. As Secretary to the Ministry, he functions as Chairman of the ministerial procurement committee tasked to select consultancy services. Seismic data shows more than 1.0 billion barrels of oil lie under the sea off North West coast, in the Gulf of Mannar, near the Kavery Basin. He acknowledged that there was criticism of the ongoing process of selection of a consultant to finalize what the ministerial committee termed the model petroleum resources agreement and bid documents to develop a computer model for fiscal analysis and marketing of the upcoming Mannar basin licensing round. The closing date which was originally scheduled for March 15 was subsequently extended to March 23 (tomorrow).

Independence Square being re-developed Sunday, 18 March 2007 - 5:09 AM SL Time Independence Square and its surroundings considered to be one of the most prestigious locations in Colombo are to be converted into an exclusive haven for cultural activities, recreation and academic and research excellence. `This would be like an academic zone` said the Director General of Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) Dr. Saman Kelagama. IPS earlier this week laid the foundation stone for its new head quarters opposite the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute building (SLFI). Walkways, limited parking and a green environment is in the blueprint undertaken by the Urban Development Authority (UDA) for this area. The Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) which is constrained by the new guidelines on buildings is shifting many of its functions to the Malabe IT Park. The ITI building near Independence Square is to be converted into a science museum which would compatible with the nature of the zone that is being developed in the area. `We want to preserve the prestige of the area and make this area more accessible to the public than it is now. At present not many people access the facilities like the public library or the national archives unless there is a specific research need. Our plan is to make it more public oriented so that ordinary people will be able to go in and do a bit of reading and research at places like Rupavahini and SLBC (Sri Lanka Broadcasting Cooperation),` said UDA Additional Director General Prassana Silva.

The saffron robe and the khaki suit: Some questions Thursday, 22 March 2007 - 3:32 AM SL Time It is reported that a Buddhist monk wants to be an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). He has reportedly undertaken to face an endurance test prescribed by the IGP. In so doing, he has gone way beyond the others of his ilk given to unorthodoxy. So far, we have had monks seeking to be lawyers, applying for driving licenses, entering politics etc. but this particular monk is sure to stir up a bigger controversy, if he wants to be a police officer without giving up the robe. The law enforcement officers are those who handle weapons, descend on criminals, and fight gun battles among other things which, we believe, don`t go with the vinaya rules guiding Buddhist monks. How can a monk chase a lawbreaker, use force to overpower him and haul him up before courts? Whether or not the monk concerned will proceed beyond the endurance test remains to be seen, but the fact that more and more monks are opting for a radical departure from the spiritual path in search of mundane gains points to a serious problem, if not a crisis, in the sasana. History, it may be argued, has numerous instances of monks straying into worldly affairs, even during the time of the Enlightened One. But, today, the situation is evidently deteriorating at a much more rapid pace.

Misuse of public property: `Limited offensives` won`t do! Tuesday, 20 March 2007 - 5:45 AM SL Time Former Minister Sripathy Sooriaarachchi, taken in for questioning over an alleged misuse of public property, has been remanded. A matter which is before Court of law, as we know, had better be left to the learned judges for adjudication. But, the government`s high octane performance in this particular case has led to a number of questions which warrant a public discussion. Is it only Sripathy who has misused public property? If Diogenes the Cynic were alive and resident in this country, he would probably go about holding a lamp in daylight looking for a politician who hasn`t misused state property. However, the fact that all politicians are culpable for the same offence doesn`t mean that one of them shouldn`t be dealt with separately for it. But, the government ought to tell the public what it proposes to do with the others who too deserve to be hauled up before Courts? Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander!

Time has come to do what`s right Sunday, 18 March 2007 - 5:07 AM SL Time Politics, it is said, is the art of the possible. But some of our politicians are doing not just what is possible but what in any democracy worthy of its name would surely be considered impossible. Take the size of the present cabinet. Would President Mahinda Rajapakse or any other politician for that matter have dared to go to the electorate and told the people that they would seek an entry for this nation in the Guinness Book of Records by appointing a cabinet this size? The tragedy of this nation is that successors do not right the wrongs of their predecessors. They go one or more better and the result is the sorry mess in governance we see today. This is further aggravated by the impotent opposition we have elected to parliament who are doing anything but keeping the government on their toes.

Precious wizard of spin can turn it Sri Lanka`s way Monday, 19 March 2007 - 7:04 AM SL Time As the first week of the ninth World Cup draws to a close, following a series of intriguing matches, it remains too early to conclude that this will be a tournament for batsman, fast bowlers, dibbly-dobblers or spinners. The conditions have been varied and this has spiced-up the cricket, providing a little bit of encouragement for all the bowlers, but not to the extent that the batsman cannot prosper. Our World Cup campaign kicked-off with an encouragingly ruthless display against Bermuda. We approached the game with the same intensity that we would the best side in the world, concentrating on playing our brand of cricket and adhering to process-orientated objectives we have been set as individuals and as a team by Tom Moody`s management staff. Our top order batsmen spent valuable time at the crease, especially Mahela [Jayawardene] who needed some runs under his belt after a slightly lean couple of months, and then the bowlers, led by our new strike force, Lasith Malinga, efficiently dismantled Bermuda`s inexperienced line-up. We are not reading too much into the margin of victory - 243 runs - but it was a nice, gentle take-off.
