Sri Lanka says terrorism no threat to 8 percent growth
Sunday, 1 April 2007 - 6:44 AM SL Time

Sri Lanka`s president said `terrorism` was no threat to growth as he forecast that the island`s economy would grow by eight percent in 2007.

President Mahinda Rajapakse also said he expected annual eight percent average growth over the next five years despite government forces battling Tamil Tiger rebels in the island`s northeast.

`If we are to raise the living standards of our people to match those of the developed world even to some extent, it is essential to maintain an average growth rate of eight percent for the next five years,` he said on Friday.

The statement of Rajapakse, who is also finance minister, came after the release of Central Bank figures showing that the economy grew by 7.4 percent in 2006, up from 6.0 percent in 2005. Last year`s performance was the best since 1978 when the economy expanded by 8.2 percent.

However, the Central Bank figures were lower than the economic growth estimate of 7.7 percent for 2006 issued by the department of census and statistics on Thursday.

`Our 10-year plan is prepared with this (eight percent growth) target in mind,` Rajapakse said.

Officials said the two sets of figures differed because they used different yardsticks and moves were under way to harmonise the numbers.

Rajapakse said the main challenge faced by the country during the past three decades was `terrorism in the North and East` and the search for a political solution to the Tamil separatist conflict which has claimed over 60,000 lives.

`During the last year the government`s policy was to fearlessly combat terrorism and develop the economy, without making terrorism an excuse to delay development,` Rajapakse said.

He said the government was also forced to deal with rising fuel prices.

His remarks came hours after the government announced a seven percent increase in the retail price of gasoline.

Official figures showed agriculture, industry and services contributed to growth in 2006.

`Economic expansion was broadbased in 2006 as all sectors grew at healthy rates,` the Central Bank said in a statement.

Heavy fighting between troops and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) guerrillas erupted in December 2005 and official figures show that at least 4,000 people have been killed since then.

On the downside, inflation rate jumped to 13.7 percent in 2006, up from 11.6 percent in 2005. The year-on-year inflation rate hit 20.5 percent in January.

How do these GOSL coolies measure this 8 percent growth?
In terms of what tangible positive gains, other than that of ceasing Tamil lands!

Loser speaking the words that the losers love to hear.
Pure, unadulterated BS!

Cheers

Katunayake attack threat to economy-JVP

Tiger terrorists possessing the ability to launch attacks using light aircraft is a threat to the country's economy, says JVP Propaganda Secretary and Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa. He told the Sunday Times FT that some foreign powers may impose travel restrictions and insurance underwriters might be compelled to impose war risk surcharge on ships operating through Colombo port by using this situation to their advantage.

Playing the Js' game of cricket and politics

By Rypvanwinkle

'Thaaththa,' Bindu Udagedera asked, 'are we winning?'
'We thought we were winning until last week...' Percy said.
'Why is that, thaaththa?' Bindu wanted to know.

'Why, Bindu,' Percy asked, 'weren't we all surprised at the setback we suffered last week?'
'Of course we were,' Bindu said, 'but even then it was a close finish...'
'What do you mean?' Percy asked, 'I thought we were all caught quite unaware...'
'What was unexpected was the close finish, thaaththa,' Bindu said, 'I thought we had almost given up...'
'Oh,' Percy said, 'you are talking about the cricket match, aren't you?'
'Of course, thaaththa,' Bindu said, 'what were you talking about?'
'Why, I was talking about the air attack on Katunayake...' Percy said.

'Well, that was perfectly timed too...' Bindu said.
'Why do you say that?' Percy wanted to know.
'Why, thaaththa, our people couldn't care less about any attack these days, so long as our cricketers are doing well...'
'I don't quite agree with that,' Percy said, 'people were very upset about the attack on Katunayake...'
'But thaaththa,' Bindu argued, 'they increased the price of petrol by seven rupees and no one seems to care and I think it is because of the World Cup...'
'I don't think the two events are connected, Bindu....' Percy said.

'All I know is that the Chairman of Selectors in the Cricket Board is also the Chairman of the Petroleum Corporation...'
'That is pure co-incidence, Bindu...' Percy assured, 'I am sure they are not waiting until the World Cup to raise petrol prices...'
'But there are other co-incidences, thaaththa...' Bindu suggested.

'What are these other co-incidences that you are so concerned about?' Percy demanded.
'Why, Mahinda maama has said that he is looking for a few more batsmen to hit out at his critics ...' Bindu observed.
'I thought he has already stolen eighteen batsmen from his rivals...' Percy said.
'It is true that they are batting better than most of his own players,' Bindu agreed, 'but he seems to want even more...'
'But what are the co-incidences?' Percy queried.

'Why, thaaththa,' Bindu pointed out, 'Now Mahinda maama's most important batsman is Jayasuriya, just like in our cricket team...'
'Does it mean that he will lose, whenever Jayasuriya fails to make an important contribution, just like with our cricket team?' Percy asked.

'We will have to wait and see?' Bindu said.
'Then, Jayasuriya should put in a good performance for Mahinda maama...' Percy said.
'Yes, but that's not all, thaaththa...' Bindu declared.
'Why do you say that?'
'Although Jayasuriya is being used to open the batting by Mahinda maama,' Bindu noted, 'it is Jayewardene's tactics that he is using, just like in our cricket team....'

'What do you mean by that?' Percy queried.
'Why, the tried and tested Jayewardene tactic of dividing the opposition...' Bindu said.
'Let us hope then that the Jayewardene tactics work, at least for Mahinda maama...' Percy said.
'But thaaththa,' Bindu said, 'what about the real World Cup?'
'Why, what about it?' Percy asked.

'Why do you think we lost the last match against South Africa?' Bindu wanted to know.
'Ah, that's easy,' Percy said, 'it is all part of a conspiracy to discredit the government, Bindu...'
'What do you mean by that?' Bindu was puzzled.
'I think Mangala and Sripathi must be responsible for encouraging the South Africans, just as they are supposed to be responsible for encouraging the Tigers to stage the attack on the airport...' Percy reasoned.
Bindu wasn't quite sure whether it was an April Fools' joke or not.

Sri Lanka says terrorism no threat to 8 percent growth

Absolutely not... We have steady growth since the independence and excellent opportunities are available for hard working Sri Lankans.... from doctors to housemaids... in and out of the country.

The proud nation must keep dividing SWETs so that they would either kill each other or jump the ship. That would leave more room and resources to be enjoyed by real Sri Lankans.

Support GOSL... your only partner in fighting in LTTE terrorist dogs, so that you can see another day. Want evidence of the success? Just compare the LTTE attacks in 2006 to 2005. In 2006 it was much less... due to unceasing annihilation.

Proud SLDF... thank you. You will be soon getting free land from the NE. Your efforts and sacrifices are always at the forefront of our minds.

All land and assets in Sri Lanka belongs to Sri Lankans.

When you went to where ever you are now as an 'economic' refugee, you gave up all rights to talk of Sri Lanka or its tamil people.

People like you have made the word 'tamil' immediately conjure up suspicion of illegal immigration, drug running, terrorism etc.

Basically you guys have made tamils the 'pariahs' of this world

If tamils were peaceful people who did not contribute to economic destruction and violence

If tamils of the NOrth and East are not in Social Welfare (1% of contribution to GDP) and contributed to the economy Sri Lanka would have been the Fastest growing country.

Unfortunately, we are the unlucky Majority.

The Sunday Times Economic Analysis
Growing in debt: Are we heading to a debt trap?

By the Economist

The national debt being higher than GDP is no April Fools? joke. The mounting public debt is a national concern for the future as well as the present. At Rs. 2537.5 Billion at the end of November last year, the debt is likely to be higher than the 2006 GDP. The public debt has grown by 16 percent in the twelve months since November 2005, when it was Rs. 2183.8 billion. With this increase during 2006, it is likely that at year?s end the national debt would be higher than the 2006 GDP that is expected to grow by around 7 percent.

Only if these dime-a-dozen pundits and believers like Thambi ever knew... that US government debt runs into trillions of dollars... and without that debt they would never have achieved putting a man on the moon or other development...

But then punnakku is readily available... TO THE SEEKERS!

Growth formula=
Total income from middle east/total number of maids in middle east
+ Total income by tourism/total number of beach boys.
