UK cracks down on LTTE front

The United Kingdom government has commenced action against a London based LTTE front organization, sources in the UK said yesterday.
UK investigators had traced a `strong` link between LTTE and one of the trustees of the organization, The Sivayogam Trust, which administers the Muthumariamman Hindu Temple, located at 180-186 Upper Tooting Road, Tooting, London, sources said.
The UK Charity Commission commenced investigating the Trust on March 20 and has suspended its bank accounts, sources said.
`We have suspended one of the charity`s trustees pending consideration of his removal, and restricted certain transactions, including over the charity`s bank accounts. The effect of this is that they cannot send funds overseas or make certain payments without the Commission`s approval,` a press statement issued by the UK Charity Commission said yesterday.
The Commission is concerned about `the conduct and suitability of one of the trustees; whether the charity`s funds are being applied properly to further its charitable purposes; and decisions taken in the administration of the charity,` the statement added.
The Sri Lankan High Commission in London has been working with the concerned British authorities in related investigations of the Sivayogam Trust, a spokesperson in the High Commission told The Island. `There have been reports that at least one of the trustees of Sivayogam has strong links to the LTTE,` the spokesperson added.

LTTE was founded to counter the state terrorism that started in 1956.
LTTE was formed in 1976 after the audiances in the Tamil International Conference were shot dead by the police.
LTTE exists because the ethnic problem remains unresolved.
So long as state oppresses Tamils LTTE will retaliate against terrorist machinary.
LTTE bombed the killing machines, Kfirs and helicopter gunships, because they bomb Tamils and kill civilians and school girls.

New Delhi, March 31 (IANS) A top Canadian politician closely linked to Sri Lanka's peace process says the ethnic conflict will never end unless Colombo recognises 'the legitimate collective and individual rights of the Tamils'.
There can never be a military solution, insisted former Ontario prime minister Bob Rae in an interview, adding that the onus of taking steps to bring peace to the island nation rested on the government and opposition parties.
'Unless the legitimate collective and individual rights of the Tamils are recognised by the government, this problem will never be solved,' the 59-year-old, who was an advisor on federalism to Colombo, told IANS via email. 'No military action will achieve the same goal.'
