We will serve you either from PARLIAMENT or PRISON!
Thursday, 22 March 2007 - 9:04 AM SL Time

The latest news is they are going to remand the modern day Ehelepola (aka Mangala Samaraweera) too. He should be jailed like SB. That will obviously be a win-win. Prisoners will love him and Mangy too would love the company of macho men.

By the way, remanding/jailing our national leaders are so common that before long spending time in a prison would be a qualification to hold high post.

The following is a list of key politicians either remanded or jailed in some pint of their political career. (in Alphabetical order)

Anuruddha Ratwatte
Chamipka Ranawaka
Da. Mu. Dissanayake
Di. Mu. Jayaratne
Keheliya Rambukwella
Mahinda Rajapakse
Rajitha Senaratne
Range Bandara
S. B. Dissanayake
Somawansa Amaresinghe
Sripathy Suriyaarachchi
Tilvin Silva
Vasudeva Nanayakkara
Wijitha Herath
Wikremabahu Karunaratne

(I write this from my memory. The list might not be complete. Please feel free to make additions/deletions)

Shakti,
When did Somawansa Amaresinghe went to prison? I thought he escaped to europe(thanks to Sirisena Cooray) before capturing in late 80's. Was it in 71?

Yeap, in 1971. With Vasudeva.

Sorry, I missed one. Mahinda Wijesekera. Also jailed in 1971 and probably the one who was tortured most among all above.

Athula Nimalasiri Jayasinghe (Loku Athula) too was jailed in 1971, but I am not sure I can include him in the list, as he is no more in active politics. (I think)

I was badly scrutinizing my memory to find Tamil or Muslim politicians we have remanded/jailed but none comes to my mind, apart from SJV.

I know VP was jailed in India. Was any other LTTE leader ever jailed or remanded? (not the cadre, I am talking about leaders)

Shakti,

Kandy District JVP MP Dimuthu Bandara Abeykoon was jailed for robbing Arms from the policemen who were on duty at Dalada Maligawa.

I think more than half of JVP MPs were jailed one time or another. Lilantha Perera was jailed for 'Takaran' case. You also forgot NM Perera, Philp Gunawardene, Colvin R De Silva and Vijaya Kumaratunge.

Cheers

I focused only on the ones still in active politics.

Otherwise the list will be too long. I think even Anagarika Dharmapala and D. S. Senenayake too were in jail. Not to mention E.H. Pedirs.

Another active politicain who was in jail for his fiercely independent views:

Shakti, I have also heard that Mahinda Vijesekera went through torture during 71.

There are set of politicians who deserve prison because of their involvement in corruption.

Politicians never hesitate to go to jail , it brings them a lot of sympathy and publicity specially if they go to jail as the result of political revenge.

They know how to convert jail episodes into votes.

Soori was smiling.

Mark,

How about sending the whole NEW JVP lot through the PROCEDURE again!!

That is not worth it as maintenance would cost too much as the tax payers have to sustain all that. Bloody waste of tax payers money man!
