He had a very good team, topped by Lalith, Gamini, Ananada etc. He messed it. The best cabinet team sri Lanka ever had was 1977 ministers.
LTTE did not allow to develop the country.
His best was fooling Rajiv to commit in Sri Lanka.

'I am not worried about the opinion of the Tamil people...now we cannot think of them, not about the lives or their opinions...the more you put pressure on the North, the happier the sinhalese people will be here...Really if I starve the Tamils out, the sinhalese people will be happy..' - First Elected President J.R.Jeyawardene -

I was waiting for someone to mention that! But I have to agree with Anizam, especially on his second point.

The old fox, like the other foxes that ruled the country, also screwed the country by his shortsighted sinhala chauvinist policies.

The tamils have no fond memories of any of the sinhala rulers of the country. They were all cunning and racist bas'ards.

JR was the reason this country is in this bad situation now. He failed the Indo Lanka agreement. He created this monster dictatorship presidency and the man behind the 1983 July riots against Tamils. After retirement He went to Australia to live because he could not live here as a pariotic citizen, He created a big mess and Rajapaksa continues....

Maitreya,

JRJ never went to Australia to live in retirement. He was always in Sri Lanka at 'Braemar' his Ward Place residence till he died in.
