The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $US300 million loan to help fund the expansion of Sri Lanka's main port, a key trans-shipment hub in South Asia.

The project will increase Colombo Port's handling capacity from 3.3 million containers in 2006 to 5.7 million by 2010, and eventually to 10.5 million, the Manila-based bank said in a statement.

Prodyut Dutt, a senior transport specialist with ADB's South Asia Department, said: 'In recent years, Colombo Port has lost market share in trans-shipment because it does not have the operating capacity or depth required to berth the latest generation container ships.'

British Prime Minister Tony Blair?s statement which indicated that finding a realistic solution to the on going conflict ?was to come back to the 2002 agreement and make sure that it is implemented,? came under fire from the Sri Lankan Muslim Information Centre in Britain.

In a statement expressing its regret over the stance adopted by the British Premier, the organisation appealed to Mr. Blair to extend greater support to resolve the country?s armed conflict, considering the current political realities. It urged Britain to minimise LTTE fund-raising activities under the prevailing terrorism laws.

While welcoming Mr. Blair?s concerns the organisation noted, ?the space created by the CFA had not lasted long by the systematic breaches of the LTTE and reprisal action of the Sri Lankan Government. The CFA has literally come to extinction and the Muslims and Tamils of the East have been released from the clutches of the LTTE.? Criticising UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, the organisation claimed the Muslim factor were simply referred to as a ?group? in the context of the CFA and the peace process, refused to recognise Muslims as a legitimate third party.
