Aust accused of breaching UN refugee convention
A human rights legal group says Australia is breaching its international obligations by sending a group of asylum seekers to Nauru for processing.

The Immigration Minister, Kevin Andrews, today announced the transfer of more than 80 Sri Lankan men currently being held on Christmas Island.

Mr Andrews says the move will deter people smugglers and potential asylum seekers from trying to reach Australia.

The spokeswoman from the group Australian Lawyers for Human Rights, Eve Lester, says the Government's policy is contrary to the United Nations (UN) convention on refugees.

'The message is loud and clear that the purpose of sending people to Nauru is a deterrent purpose,' she said.

'That means that the measure assumes a punitive quality and that puts Australia unquestionably in breach of article 31 of the Refugee Convention which prohibits the imposition of penalties on people who arrive in the territory of a state illegally.'

83 tamils who went to Australia are happy to be safe in Nauru than in lanka, there process will take few years (3-5)they will not be checked under Auz laws, but UNHCR will look into the matters and give the reports to Auz gov. latter they can settle in auz permanently.
Dont believe anyone saying they will be returned back to lanka.

LTTE is more endangered then the Bengal Tigers.

If this is true why bother buying MIG . Or why bother making secret deals, or why kill innocent Tamils.
You will nto need bodyguards and armoured vehicles for a dieing tiger.
All your actions shows fear only the mouth is making noise.

No criticism from international community ? Rumbukella
Thursday, 15 March 2007
A top Sri Lankan official said yesterday that the country has not been subject to criticism by the international community on its human rights records. Speaking on the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) meeting in Geneva, Keheliya Rambukwella, the government's defense spokesman told reporters that there had been a misreporting of facts about the proceedings.

'There were 39 countries taking part in the meeting at foreign ministerial level and only three nations, Sweden, Switzerland and France, had made any mention of the Human Rights situation,' Rambukwella said.

His statements appear to support various claims by Tamil sources that the international community has been muted in dealing with the Sri Lankan state's human rights violations.

The Tamil Tigers, in their statement on the 5th anniversary of the ceasefire agreement, pointed out that the international community has failed in dealing with the Sri Lankan state?s abuses of human rights. 'The continued failure of the international community, despite the volume of independently gathered evidence, to take effective steps to curb the state?s abuses, is turning the Tamil homeland into an Asian Darfur,' the statement read.

Meanwhile, the widely read Tamil Guardian Editorial, in its March 7th editorial entitled, 'False Hope' said, 'there is a shameful thundering silence from that mighty institution which appointed itself to manage Sri Lanka?s transition to peace: the Co-Chairs.' The Editorial said that the co-chairs, unable to micromanage the outcome they wanted for the peace process, had simply abandoned it including the conditions for disbursement of aid to Sri Lanka.

'It is precisely because the international community has given President Rajapakse a green light to militarily destroy the LTTE that the ceasefire collapsed so spectacularly last yea,' the paper succinctly summed up.

'The ramifications of this internationally endorsed new ?war for peace? are exactly the same as the last one. Hundreds of thousands of Tamils will be displaced. Our people will endure starvation and disease amid international embargoes as the world maintains a studied silence ... Large numbers will of die or be maimed,' the paper added.

The escalating conflict between the Sri Lankan Government and the Tamil Tigers has killed over 4000 people and displaced more than 120,000 in the north and east since December 2005.

Even if the UN sets up a monitoring office, it will go down the same road as the SLMM.

For a begger state who's next handout could be comming from the UN I think this time you have to do a lot of Huffing and Puffing B4 you get anything. Do not think you can do the sane with the UN.
Even your mention on this matter show the fear within .
Who are you.? MR will not dare utter such things. He is the one who has his -removed-in between a rock and a hard place.

Moby!!
UN should be there to protect you and me and others, look whats going on in sri lanka, so many murders abductions around Colombo. its become a big biz in lanka. tigers started this long time ago, (kidnap rich and get money) now others following. Dont think Sri lankan dont care if UN comes. there are many will welcome but JVP, JHU will be screaming.
SLMM cant do their work properly bcz of GOSL, they are keeping quite or they they will be kicked out. Norway helped GOSL and tigers with money only to bring peace in lanka. even now they are helping the buddist temples.
off now
