Troops mounted a massive search operation in the Wilpattu National Park and found the bodies of eight missing army personnel and wildlife officers killed in an LTTE ambush were found yesterday.
The bullet-riddled bodies of Commander of the Anuradhapura Saliyapura Gajaba Regimental Headquarters, Colonel Jayantha Suraweera, Major P. D. F. A Jayaratne, Corporal Kapila Kumara and Private Suranga, Chief Park Warden Wasantha Pushpananda and wildlife trackers M. D. Vitharna, Kelum Jayawardena and Chandana Pradeep Navaratna were found by troops who reached the site of the ambush at Kokavil, about 30 km inside the jungle, security officials said.
The four army personnel and four wildlife officers had entered the National park from the Hunuwilgama entrance at Nochchiyagama around 9.30 am on Friday and were reported missing.
They were killed by LTTE in an ambush, Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said.
According to reports, the group had visited the National Park for a security assessment to plan out a permanent military presence at strategic locations following LTTE activity.
The park lies on the northwest coat, 30 km due west of Anuradhapura, and spans the border between North Western Province and North Central Province.
Stressing on the need for security, a senior environmentalist recalled this was not the first time that the LTTE launched attacks inside this important national park.
The LTTE killed 23 wildlife officers, who were working in the park office on May 4, 1985, after attacking the Sri Maha Bodhiya in Anuradhapura.
The park was closed to visitors after that due to the prevailing situation in the country and the unsuitable security situation in the area. After 16 years it was reopened to visitors on March 16, 2003.
Five local visitors including well-known author Nihal de Silva and a wildlife tracker were killed in a bomb blast at the park on May 27 last year.
Wildlife Chief Dayananda Kariyawasam could not be reached for comment as he was overseas.

great victory? No, killing a few SLA pigs in the jungle is not hard work for the LTTE.
Unfortunate the civilians got caught up with the SLA scum. |

Who are these 'we'?
Unfortunately I have never seen any moral standards from the LTTE supporters in LNP. So I am surprised whom you meant by ?we?.

Ananth19,
You say:
We do not celebrate the death of others.
We do not call names.
we are of a high moral standards.
Then Revy says:
No, killing a few SLA pigs in the jungle is not hard work for the LTTE.
So whoever, you meant by 'we' Revy does not obviously belong to that group.
