Selective use of provision of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights against less powerful countries is simply a power play and hegemony that undermines the global effort to combat terror.

Civilian deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan, rendition flights and Guantanamo Bay, in its war on terror does not stack up all that well in the eyes of anyone either, although, apparently the USA think it is worth the price!

The truth of the matter is that as the only superpower in the world, it does not have a political leadership or parallel strategies to address matters of concern to world?s masses.

It is probably worthwhile for USA to bear in mind that when calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to peace talks with the intransigent LTTE.

US foreign policy seems to me, is all about projection of it?s power abroad to safeguard it?s own selfish interests at any cost, code named war on terror. It seems to me that it has very little to do with peace in middle east, poverty, restructuring of world?s financial institutions, eradication of poverty, threat global warming, social injustice, acceptance and application of universal human rights and international law, promotion of democracy or any other issue considered just and reasonable.

Forcing moral high ground of this way is rich indeed from a country that has an appalling dictatorial history when dealing with it?s enemies, especially internationally and from the Congress, which only recently approved an invasion of a sovereign nation violating all the rights in the world, under the pretext of war on terror.

That really is what bothered me!

SL government should endeavour to create a climate of fairness in which Tamil aspirations are fulfilled. Slowly emerging Tamil democrats in mainstream politics that are credible and sincere will eventually take the appeal of the intransigent LTTE, to internal and external players who use it as a leverage to promote their own hidden agendas away.

Combined with effective use of military force as well as depriving the smooth of flow of funds and arms through international cooperation, will force the LTTE to go bust.

That has to be the realistic conditions in which to promote lasting human rights or at least to go about promoting such noble ideals in a meaningful way. Then we can move on to the other burning and trendy ones, such as sustainable economic growth and green politics in general. So, is the USA with us on this or not?

Shanthi:

You are crying over 8 soldiers? The LTTE has taken down 1000s of Sinhala occupation forces at a time. ALl bloodied to a pulp and fertilising Tamil soil as we speak. All this gung ho talk of yours is fine on the web, but if I were you I would change my words to deeds and enrol in the army right away. This way you can oversee the effective eradication of the LTTE menace :) Good luck.
