Who ever who believes that this is WAR you are mistaken, Its the latest way of keeping the country breathing. prices are hitting sky high.
If you observed the past few operations in the Eastern Region,you would realize that the LTTE had always kept their casualties to a minimum and had been withdrawing. Did anyone of you ask why?
1. The strength of the LTTE in the eastern Region is not a match for the SLA (at the moment)
2. So what is the best thing to do, withdraw from East and strengthen the North wit troops.
3. While the SLA are getting them selves spread.
Tactical withdrawal. If I recall right, ever since the conflicts between the SLA & LTTE had started there had never been a major/heavy battle where LTTE lost men & machinery in the east. They have always made sure that they withdraw. They never faught back to hold the SLA troops back.It is not in their interest to hold on to the easteren region when the SLA is spreading themselves.
Why spend billions of rupees to gain land which is not important, if they really want to have a battle, why dont they attack Vanni/Mulativ bases.
If they do that, it will be another Vietnam !!!!!
And since they cannot afford to loose men in the north, they stage a war drama to fool the average sinhala/Tamil & Muslim.
4. And after all, there should be some truth to the rumor, that Mr MR and Mr VP had agreed/signed a agreement.
5. This is only to fool the south (the poor)
So enjoy it while you can. |

Thopigala and adjoining Sinhalese forest areas were under LTTE control since mid 1980#s. Even IPKF was not able to capture this base. But that Time LTTE have defend this base by intensive, light and highly mobile guerrilla offensive. Now the difficulties faced by LTTE is manly strategic. Instead of destabilizing the enemy territory and increasing guerrilla offensive defending a base is extremely costly and some time suicidal for non state army. If LTTE review their direct and defensive war strategy they can over come the loss of Karuna and win.
If SLA can take Thopicala they can claim a brake through in the eastern front. That will be a great loss to LTTE.
If SLA defeated with high causalities in Thopicala situation in the East will change in favor of LTTE. |

To an extent I think Diplomat is right, As Mao said you can always get back land but you can;t get back your men, so the men have to be saved first.
So he is right it is a tactical withdrawral. The east has always been in guerilla mode. But Vanni is a convential army, so it will be a long protracted war there |
