=========
The Confederation Bridge is a bridge spanning above Northumberland Strait, linking Prince Edward Island with mainland New Brunswick, Canada.
Construction began in the fall of 1993, and continued for three and a half years, and cost $1 billion.
The bridge is a two-lane highway toll bridge that carries the Trans-Canada Highway.
Most of the curved bridge is 40 meters above water, and it contains a 60 meters high navigation span to permit ship traffic.
The bridge rests on 62 piers, of which the 44 main piers are 250 meters apart.
It is a multi-span post-tensioned concrete box girder structure.
Box Girder Bridge
==============
A box girder bridge is a bridge where the main beams comprise girders in the shape of a hollow box.
Construction
==========
All bridge components, including the pier bases, ice shields, main spans, and drop-in spans, were constructed on land.
All major components were lifted from the staging facility, transported, and placed in using the HLV Svanen, a Danish-built heavy lift catamaran.

Before the bridge had been built above the strait, there was a ferry service. The ferry service would cost you much more than current toll rate.
If you travel in a car with your family (ex: husband, wife, and two kids), you only will pay $40.50 for car and passengers.
But, ferry ride would cost money for two adult tickets, two half tickets and transportation cost for the car. You probably would have to paid minimum of $100! |

We were there a few yrs back. great place. went over the bridge and came out on the ferry since we were headed to Nova scotia.
You only pay when you LEAVE the island!
when you enter there is a visitor centre and a replica of the column used in the bridge. pretty neat. lodging was fairly cheap i would say. |
