China, even though widely thought to be insensitive to human rights issues, probably sees a window of opportunity in Sri Lanka to fish in troubled waters and get a foothold at the expense of India which is fast distancing itself from Sri Lanka given the human rights situation and the failure to deliver on a viable political package for the Tamil speaking people.
Rajapakse has also been open in his dealings with Pakistan. Last week Pakistan sent a high level defence delegation led by its Defence Secretary Tariq Waseem Ghazi to discuss bilateral ties on defence matters and further military cooperation.
The visit was eagerly fed to newspapers by the government with pro government media stating the Pakistan delegation was in Sri Lanka to talk about arms.
Chinese assistance
Meanwhile it remains to be seen how far China will eventually go to help Sri Lanka in pursuing a military solution to the ethnic conflict and a clear reflection of that position is bound to be reflected in the anticipated joint statement after Rajapakse?s seven day visit.
Interestingly, the highlight of the visit is to be the finalisation of the Hambantota Port Development Project which ousted Ports Minister Mangala Samaraweera has charged was tailor-made to fit in the proposals of Basil Rajapakse and another close family member.
This after all is somebody?s paradise. |
