COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) -- The U.S. and Italian ambassadors to Sri Lanka were 'slightly injured' when their helicopters were targeted by mortars fired by suspected Tamil Tiger rebels in the east on Tuesday, officials said.
The helicopters used by U.S. Ambassador Robert Blake and his Italian counterpart Pio Mariani had just landed in Batticaloa when several mortars landed close to the aircraft, said Sri Lankan government minister Mahinda Samarasinghe, who accompanied them.
'Both the ambassadors are fine, and they have suffered slight injuries,' Samarasinghe said.
Mariani needed medical care and was taken to the area's main hospital for treatment. The nature of his injury was not immediately known, but Samarasinghe said they were 'slight.'
The Sri Lankan Defense Ministry blamed the attack on separatist Tamil Tiger rebels -- who are banned in the United States and in European Union countries as a terrorist group.
There was no immediate comment available from the rebels who did not responded to phone calls.
The two ambassadors, accompanied by their staff and Sri Lankan officials, had traveled Tuesday morning to Batticaloa aboard two helicopters to attend a meeting about the development of the area, a hotbed of separatist violence.
'As their choppers landed mortars were fired by the Tigers,' said Lt. Col. Upali Rajapakse, a senior officer the Defense Ministry's information section.
He said the diplomats had already gotten out of the helicopters when the mortars were fired. It was not immediately known how they sustained their injuries.
Seven Sri Lankan security personnel who were on the ground were also wounded, Rajapakse said.

Lankakolla,

If what you are saying is true then the Sinhalese must be wiped out. They are the #1 terrorist in SL.

They kill their own people and blame others.
Tell me the Sinhalese are not guilty of terrorism and I will believe what you say.

If the Sinhalese can do such things to their own people just imagine what they are capable of doing to the Tamils?

What the GOSL said and the situation on the ground is not the same.

indeed, my friend!
it's in fact worse for the LTT than GOSL says it is for the LTT! :-))
GOSL is using the CFA to cover up the imminent dangers it poses to the LTT.

are you really that intelligent, or are you just pretending!?
LOLZ.

And how convenient for the foreign ambassadors to get hurt while the minister is unhurt.

It smells like a set up.
With the SLA behind it.

Ho ho ho.... here is the confirmation...

Military Spokesman of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Irasiah Ilanthirayan, expressing deep regret for the injuries caused to the foreign diplomats who landed in the military airfield of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) in Batticaloa and the Weber Stadium where 23-3 Brigade Commander's military headquarters is located, condemned the Government of Sri Lanka for having endangered the lives of foreign diplomats bringing them into the artillery launchpads inside the military zone without following diplomatic procedures.

Military Spokesperson of the Tigers, Mr. Irasaiah Ilanthirayan (Marshall)
'We immediately ceased the fire as soon as we were notified of the presence of foreign diplomats under artillery fire by Mr. Marine, the UN official for coordinating security arrangments here in Kilinochchi,' Mr. Ilanthirayan said.
