I thought Mangala n Sripathy were among the Govt ministers who condemned the human rights commission..!

Mangala and Sripathy complain to the Human Rights Commission

(LeN-2007 Feb. 22, 4.30pm) Former minister Mangala Samaraweera and Sripathy Suriarachchi lodged complaints to the human rights commission regarding death threats they have received and the removal of their security at a crucial point.

The complaint lodged by Samaraweera states that he has constantly received death threats from the LTTE as it was him who initiated a massive campaign against them in the European Union and other countries forcing them to ban the LTTE. He had also said that on several occasions LTTE spies had been roaming around his houses in Matara and Colombo and that some of them had been arrested by the security forces as well.

Sripathy Suriarachchi had stated that he has clearly been a target of the LTTE as he on many occasions categorically condemned the activities of the LTTE in speeches he made at public gatherings and on televised interviews. He said that according to a LTTE cadre who was arrested once the LTTE had attempted to kill him in the Kdawatha area.

The two former ministers had pointed out that when Ministers Lakshman Kadirgamar and G.L. Peris complained about their security, to then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, when they were in the opposition, Wickremesinghe immediately provided them with adequate security. Thus Samaraweera and Suriarachchi asked the human rights commission to intervene and provide them with adequate security.

UNP concerned over Sripathi?s charges

By Susitha R. Fernando
The main opposition UNP yesterday charged that President Mahinda Rajapaksa was violating all agreements.

Referring to allegations made by sacked minister Sripathi Suriarachchi, Chief Opposition whip Joseph Michael Perera said the President should make his stand clear regarding those allegations.

UNP Chairman, Rukman Senanayake also said he had asked the President to hold an impartial inquiry into the allegation and reveal the truth to the public.

Endorsing a statement made by JVP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Mr. Perera said the President should take back the cabinet portfolios given to Milinda Moragoda and Karu Jayasuriya whose names had been revealed in the COPE report.

Here is a piece from BBC....

The chief minister of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu has warned that stern action will be taken against people linked to Sri Lanka's Tamil Tigers.
He said the warning applied to political leaders and individuals.

The Tamil Tigers are banned in India, which designated them as terrorists after the murder of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

He was killed by the Tamil Tigers in a suicide bombing while electioneering 15 years ago in Tamil Nadu.

Armed struggle

'Strict instructions had been issued not to show any lenience to those who are in nexus with the Tamil Tigers and try to supply arms to them,' Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said.

Traditionally, Mr Karunanidhi's Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party is seen as sympathetic towards the struggle of Sri Lankan Tamils.

Thousands of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees live in Tamil Nadu

But he stressed that his party's sympathy for Sri Lankan Tamils should not be seen as an approval for the Tamil Tigers' armed smuggle.

That much hyped Ceasefire Agreement
The present military gains have brought about a sense of euphoria among some in the south to conclude that the war is well nigh a finish, or that it can be finished almost in a whiff, in spite of the LTTE undercurrents, such as the reported tapping of arms suppliers to Sri Lanka etc?a sure sign of hectic activity outside on behalf of the LTTE. The support given to them by their expatriate sympathizers is by no means over; although they are banned in several countries, there are avenues open internationally such as money laundering that can fund the LTTE; a war proper would be funded several times over. There are also countries including neighbors politically sympathetic towards them, for one reason or the other?all these can re-kindle the seemingly dying embers of hostility by them to be ignited into a scorching fire that may well reverse the military gains.

The international community shares the blame for Sri Lanka's renewed civil war, the Tamil Tigers have charged, accusing them of bias and inaction they say has left a ceasefire pact meaningless and fostered conflict.
