UNP admits CFA `responsibility`
Wednesday, 21 February 2007 - 6:16 AM SL Time

The main oppsosition in Sri Lanka has accepted `full responsibility` of signing a truce with the Tamil Tigers.

The United National Party (UNP) said then Prime Minister, Ranil Wickramasinghe, signed the ceasefire as attempts by many previous leaders failed to end the bloodshed.

Wickramasinghe and LTTE supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran signed the Norwegian brokered Cease Fire Agreement (CFA) was signed on 22 February 2002.

In an exclusive interview with the BBC, President Mahinda Rajapaksa described the CFA as a `mistake`.

Rajapaksa signed an MoU in 2005 with the Peoples Liberation Front (JVP), that pledged to `review fully` the CFA if he was elected.

UNP Assistant Secretary Dr. Jayalath Jayawardhene told journalists in Colombo that the party wanted to end the conflict that claimed over 60,000 lives and over 30,000 made disabled.

`Nearly a million people were internally displaced in Sri Lanka by 2002,` he said.

He denied the accusations by certain parties that the CFA offered legitimacy to the LTTE by effectively declaring Kilinochchi and Mulaitivu districts as LTTE-held territory.

`Within weeks of signing the CFA, we managed to open District Secretariats in Mulaitivu and Kilinochchi,` Jayawardhene said.

The parliamentarian hailed the reopening of A9 highroad within weeks of signing the CFA as a step forward `towards reuniting divided Sri Lanka`.

The CFA was criticised by the Sinhala nationalists as a step towards `dividing Sri Lanka`.

The then President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, accused Wickramasinghe of signing the truce without the approval of the head of state.

4 years later CBK confessed that sabotaging the peace process of UNP was one of the worst blunders that she did in her carrier.

In an exclusive interview with the BBC, President Mahinda Rajapaksa described the CFA as a 'mistake'.

We have to wait for another 4 years till MR realise his blunder.
We, SriLankans had become 'guinea pigs' all politicians try out their patriotic power winning experiments.

Basic lesson in humanity one cannot go wrong by deciding to go for peace.

'Within weeks of signing the CFA, we managed to open District Secretariats in Mulaitivu and Kilinochchi,' Jayawardhene said.

Rather , LTTE started killing people, building a base to attack Trincomalee harbour , openly extort people by taxing every body who uses A9 , strengthen military power, and then walk out from peace talks establishing political offices in government control areas infiltrated with LTTE pistol gangs.

It also gave LTTE the legitimacy to following international terrorism.
After a Chinese ship was attacked off the northern Sri Lankan coast, on 20 March 2003 it was widely believed to have been carried out by the LTTE. Based on a recorded telephone conversation beetween the LTTE and General Trond Furuhovde, a Norwegian and then Head of SLMM, SLMM is accused of having indirectly suggested to the LTTE to put the blame on a 'third party with stolen uniforms'. No such 'third parties' have previously carried out such attacks in Sri Lankan seas. SLMM later issued a statement blaming a 'third party' without naming who that third party was.

UNP Should bring proposals to abolish CFA or show the door to Ranil.
Or MR will spoon balance 43 and liquidize UNP.

So what's the big deal? CFA was signed for peace. It worked to a large extent barred for some incidents which were instigated by JVP, CBK, SLFP and JHU to discredit RW govt. CFA brought about peace and prosperity to the entire country during a very short period of time, whereas, war-peace approach of SLFP brought about misery to the entire nation and profits to a few, like CBK, Anurudda, MR, Basil, Gota and some commanders, like Sandagiri.
CFA would have been totally suscessful, had the CBK as the commander in cheif and other heavy weights put their weight behind it instead of back stabbing RW.
Because, RW weakened the LTTE, now MR can claim victory after victory in the east, or so they claim.

I think CFA seemed to work on the surface...at least for a while. everything looked alright until everyone got to know that ltte was upto to their usual tricks.
during the so called CFA...the defence forces of the country lost almost the same or more personnel than during times of war. Ltte blatantly and openly violated the CFA much much more than the SLDF which clearly visible even in SLMM reports. We all know how SLMM operates now don't we :)))
Ltte USED CFA to further their cause of eelam...nothing more

which CBK admitted recently that this one the worst blunders she did in her lifetime. 20 million people pay the price for it now. then she passed the baton another war lord.

The A9 highway was closed again due to the reason several ministers had ships rented GOSL to transport essentail items to north. Their ships were idling. Since A9 is closed these ministers back in business.

How much defence people died after MR came to power?
Did you forget the MR sacrificed 92 navy men in Kabithigollawa in one lot in a split second.

Rather , LTTE started killing people

Good. I never knew LTTE started killing people only AFTER the CFA in 2002. I thought they killed people ever since mid 1970s. If Magha says they did not kill even a cockroach before the CFA I will accept that.

strengthen military power, building a base to attack Trincomalee harbour

What a great discovery. According to Magha, LTTE had even started strengthening military powers and building bases after 2002. Before that they might have been so weak.

openly extort people by taxing every body who uses A9

How bad this CFA is. Before that LTTE had never taxed anyone. Prabhakaran might have been living by the money he begged from the pilgrims to Nagadeepa.

establishing political offices in government control areas infiltrated with LTTE pistol gangs.

I thought since mid 1970s LTTE operated in govt. controlled area. How wrong I was.

According to this good doctor who knows everything, LTTE had started all their dirty work after CFA in 2002. They have done nothing wrong before the CFA.

Obviously Magha had forgotten to list down the rest of the bad things happened during the CFA period.

LTTE attacked Petroleum during the CFA.
LTTE killed Bhikkus at Aranthalawa during the CFA.
Central Bank, Galadhari, CTO bomb blasts happened during the CFA.
LTTE even attacked the Katunayake Airport during the CFA.

I am sure Magha will next time prove it was the CFA that enabled Prabhakaran?s parents to have intimacy and was the sole reason why Prabha was born.
