Wednesday, 07 February 2007
The ruling Rajapaksa regime in Sri Lanka has launched a major crackdown on all political opponents in Colombo and elsewhere, according to Sinhala media.
Embodied by recent military successes against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (
LTTE) in Sampoor, Vaharai and Verugal, the Rajapaksas have launched attacks against leftist pro-Tamil independence elements and the Bandaranayke family, reports say.
On Tuesday three leftist journalists were abducted, prompting demonstrations by media personal in Colombo.
Sri Lankan Defence Ministry said on Wednesday that the three journalists were `working for the tigers` and added that claymore mines, explosives and micro-pistols were recovered from the arrested.
The three journalists would be killed under Sri Lanka`s new laws allowing capital punishment for `traitors`.
Meanwhile, the remaining member of the Bandaranayke family in Sri Lankan politics, `Clown Prince` Anura Bandaranayke has also been the subject of death threats from elements closely linked to the Defence Ministry, Sinhala media reported today.
Anura who was bidding for the post of Prime Minister just two years ago has been successively demoted to Foreign Minister, Tourism Minister and now History Minister.
Sources in Colombo say that Mahinda,
Gotabhaya and Basil are determined to drive the Bandaranaykes out of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (
SLFP) founded by SWRD Bandaranayke in 1956.
Former President and Anura`s sister Chandrikamuki has settled in London, England since leaving office. She is the proud owner of Britain`s most expensive home, according to British media.
