Pera,
JVP will USE Mangala and Ranil to appoint one of their members as the leader of the opposition.
As usual TNA will go shopping for Sinhala politicians (usual practice since GG Ponnambalam) and will be kicked aside once the leader of opposition Hon Weerawanse is elected.
Anura will be doing the donkey dances for the audience.
Nothing drastic going to happen as no one particularly, the JVP, wants an election now.
TNA will not do anything unless there is a 'no confidence motion' on the Govt. Then they will vote for the motion.
Perhaps that is what they would be told by the LTTE. GG Ponnambalam politics is long forgotten among the Tamils.
Both SLFP & UNP will ensure that JVP does not get to the Opposition Leader's Position. Whatever people might say, Ranil is not that foolish even though he may not be marketable.
If anyone is going to say 'enough is enough' and go for an election, it will be MR. It is he, who would finally decide.
He will try his level best to contain this 'Storm in a Tea Cup' and carry on. May be if, as and when, he bags a few more success in the WAR front, he may go for an election.
However, the million dollar question is how many SLFP'ers would dare to challenge MR. Then the whol;e situation might change.
Perhaps, Rajitha the reformist can call for reforms within the ruling party!!
Cheers,

Kula,
Thanks for the reply.
I am 100% sure JVP will do ANYTHING to not to go for an election now. Same goes for 'remaining' UNPens.
No SLFP MP will join Mangala and the gang. In todays Sinhala newspapers, there is this interesting article. Dilan Perera strongly criticizing Mangala Anura and Sripathi. Also Mithreepala Sirisena has criticized the trio yesterday.
One thing, the SLFP guys think of their future...when two strongmen Mangala and Anura is being kicked out, the remaining people getting closer to better perks.
I was just joking of TNA... Of course, being LTTE proxy, they will not be allowed to join any sort of coalition.
Ranil has no options in this broader coalition (if there is any)..either to hand over leader of the opposition post to JVP or CBK (god save us!!). Therefore Ranil being JRJ's nephew, there will not be any coalition! We will have a split opposition.
Cheers

When Mr. Dissanayake had first tried to reach Mr. Samaraweera's Stanmore Crescent residence, he was prevented by a group of police personnel who had reportedly said they received orders from the top not to allow anyone other than family members into Mr. Samaraweera's residence. ........
Only once the angry Minister Fowzie made it clear that he had no intention of meeting Mr. Samaraweera, did police let him proceed.
May God help SL and its people!
I thought all this talk about SL becoming a banana republic is a kind of emotional exaggeration. But how wrong I was. Edited By - Maninder - 13 Feb 2007 04:44:50 GMT |

Pera,
True there will be no coalition. But as indicated in another news item, the opposition might vote together on some issues.
Whether, that would make any difference, I would not think so. However, in a crunch situation where the masses are getting tired of the Govt. and the cost of living is unbearable, there will be people to jump ship.
Until then 'business as usual'.
Cheeers.

The SLFP heavyweight, Fernandopulle had aptly put it when he was questioned by a certain medium as to whether it was true that he (Fernandopulle) too was going to rebel against the President along with Mangala-Anura-Shreepathi...
Mr. Fernandopulle had answerd...
'what do you think I am?? stupid??? when all is going the president's way and when he (President) has routed the LTTE in the east and has boosted the morale of the forces and the civillians all over SL, do you honestly think that I would politically commit suicide by going against him with some low political IQ fellows like Anura??? you must be kidding me! No, thank you, I am totally satisfied with what I got and I am with him (President)...'
And this thought goes a long way, if anyone needs any clarification... Edited By - ahmadineja - 13 Feb 2007 05:08:40 GMT |

Ahmadineja,
Perhaps Jeyaraj may have not forgotten the letter Anura sent him few years ago 'reminding' him that when Jeyaraj first came to politics he only had a foot cycle to peddle with!!

It appears that this ousted trio had been operating against MR since his election to presidency. There is good reason for Anura to do that and it is a bit pity that Mangala had got into Anura/CBK trap. It is indeed sheer stupidity of them to rebel at this hour when MR's popularity is at peak, and on the other hand it is the right time too to tarnish MR image as it might be a lot harder to pull MR's leg if he continues to consolidate his power with UNP support.
As most of us see, it is not at all likely that JVP will go for a destabilization of MR government as their own survival too depends on its stability. It is also good to have a strong opposition now as it might help to neutralize anti-national forces within the new government make-up. |
