Karuna slams Human Rights Watch over latest report
Monday, 5 February 2007 - 2:38 AM SL Time

A day before the UN Security Council working group was slated to study special envoy Allan Rock`s report on abductions by the Karuna faction, the group led by V. Muralitharan, alias Karuna Amman slammed the New York based Human Rights Watch (HRW) for making similar charges against his outfit in a report released two weeks ago.

Karuna Amman however lauded the landmark weekend visit undertaken by President Mahinda Rajapakse to Vakarai saying it gives the Tamil people hope of the commitment of the Rajapaksa regime to resolve the continuing ethnic conflict despite the signing of a cease fire agreement which today remains only on paper.

`We welcome this visit. This is the first time a President is visiting the area and it brings the Tamil people a lot of hope and expectations of a solution being arrived at very soon,` TMVP spokesman Azad Maulana told the Daily Mirror.

While the military continues to liberate the east from the LTTE with the fall of Sampur and Vakarai there are fears the government will next have to reckon with another armed group in the form of the Karuna faction ? a group Allan Rock, the SLMM and HRW have allaged are working with the assistance of certain sections of the government forces.

In a letter adressed to the Advocacy Director of HRW Ms. Joe Becker the political arm of the Karuna faction, the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pullikal (TMVP), has charged that afidavits contained in the 100 page HRW report titled `Karuna Group Abducts Children for Combat - Government Complicity in Forced Recruitment of Young Tamils` was collected in collaboration with the LTTE.

`You state that you received our letter too late for it to be reflected specifically in the report. We think that this is not good enough reason for HRW to rush to judgment against us. Your urgency to publish a one-sided report is not a valid reason to damage the reputation of our organisation. We see it as an attempt to avoid our offer for your agents to investigate the allegations in the affidavits collected by your agents with the collaboration of the LTTE,` the TMVP said.

The TMVP says HRW has placed its credibility at stake by presenting reports that are based on mere `allegations` without giving due consideration to a fair cross-checking of the material available and further notes that is is not only damaging to the former LTTE outfit but also the Tamil children who been the victims of a deliberate policy of child recruitment by the LTTE for years.

`We see your report as an attempt to deflect attention from the sole criminals of child abuse in Tamil politics --namely, the LTTE.

Mr. Velupillai Prabakaran, the leader of the LTTE, survives solely on the child soldiers recruited forcibly by his cadres. UNICEF figures indicate that the LTTE has recruited 5956 children since 2002.

They continue to do so despite assurances given to Mr. Allan Rock himself that all children will be released from their ranks. The only way they could deflect attention from their crimes was by accusing us of committing the same crime,` TMVP added.

Karuna Amman is inviting HRW officials to meet him and investigate his bases in the east and is hopeful in fairness to the TMVP and to the principles of justice HRW will consider suspending or withdrawing the controversial report until the allegations are carefully verified.

Everyone knows that the human rights watch keep a blind eye when Pirapa used child cadres. Karuna has all the rights to slam them. Who can blame them?

Human rights, Norwegians, Nordic, Red Cross, UN,CFA all these are a laughing stock.

Bro, just as I said before you have added the more laughing stocks SLMM, Alan (White tiger) Rock. Who else in the list, Solheim, Hanssen baur and Orla Clinton of the UN too.

Bro, I cannot remember all those white tigers who stand in for the absence of Pirapa. It would be constructive if you can make a long list of impartial observants :)

Anyway, have fun in doing that!!

no use! they are blind as bat.

here is how Sivaji-lingam replied to MR's request

TNA parliamentarian MK Sivajilingam told BBC Sandeshaya that Mahinda Rajapaksa should restart talks with Tamil Tigers if he is genuine in his efforts to end the bloodshed.

'We were given a mandate to regard the LTTE as sole representatives of the Tamils,' he said.
